'No guns? People use knives, axes' and more letters to the editors

No guns? People use knives, axes

Your Dec. 15 Times editorial is exactly what I expected. But take a moment to look at the past events in China where guns are outlawed: The slaughter in schools of kindergarten children, not with guns but knives, hammers and axes.

I doubt we can stop someone from committing a horrendous crime such as that on Friday. No guns, use knives. No knives, how about the hammer, axe, or a bomb. Need I continue?

When someone wants to commit a crime, they find a way to do it.

Should we look into better control to school access? Do we need more security cameras, easier ways to lock access in the schools quickly in a potential emergency?

But then, how do we stop someone from committing this type of crime outside the school as the children arrive or leave?

Will we ever be able to protect our children 100 percent? I have my doubts, and it's unfortunate.

Santa program made senior happy

Home Instead Senior Care has just completed the ninth year of our "Be a Santa to a Senior" program. We have made 560 seniors very happy this Christmas season. Many of these seniors do not have family and would not receive anything other than through this program.

I thank the 12 Walgreens and their staffs that participated, and the non-profit organizations that provided the names to us and the many people who purchased the many gifts, and the CAREGivers and the many people who helped with the wrapping and helped with the distribution of the gifts.

Merry Christmas.

Something must be done

My letter is one of many that tries to put to paper the sadness, dismay and sense of helplessness that invades my every waking moment since the horrific tragedy of Newtown, Conn. But now more than ever before, I'm so filled with questions that I don't know how to proceed. What is happening to our country?

Prayer obviously isn't the only answer. More talk about gun control, limiting access to weapons doesn't seem to be the answer. I believe that the same day this horrible thing happened in Newtown, other violent, tragic, life-ending violence to men, women and children occurred around our country. What is happening? How can we help stop this insanity? I just need someone to get the heck off their political, religious or some other soap box and look me in the eye to tell me what I can do! We can do something!

What do editorial, cartoon mean?

Does the Friday Times' pro-union editorial mean that the Times Free Press is now or soon will become a Guild newspaper as was the original Chattanooga Times for years? I noticed that the Free Press side of the editorial section featured an anti-union cartoon. What, if anything, does this mean?

'He could have murdered all of them, but, he decided to just "cut them up a little."

A man stabbed 22 primary school students in a knife attack in China on Friday, officials said, the latest in a series of assaults. The attacker “has been detained”, said a spokesman for the Guangshan county government in the central province of Henan, where the stabbing happened.

If China had just taken this deranged person's guns away, then, heaven knows, he could never have stabbed the children! Mental Giants on the loose.......

Ken Dumbass,

"Twenty-two elementary school students were stabbed, so was an adult villager" but none of the victims died, the official, who declined to give his name, told AFP.

You strategically omitted the number of deaths in this attack. Why is that? I bet I know! The quote included was also in that story. Big difference between 0 dead with a knife and 27 dead with a gun.

"If China had just taken this deranged person's guns away, then, heaven knows, he could never have stabbed the children!"

If he had shot them, they would all likely be dead.

Can you really not grasp the idea that a person is more deadly with a gun than a knife? Are you really trying to argue against that fact? Are you insane? Seriously, is there something wrong with you that would make you believe these highly illogical, nonsensical things and then argue them?

"Mental Giants on the loose......."

No, seriosuly, you are a mental midget. The tiniest of mental midgets. You literally just quadrupled-down on one of the must ridiculous assertions I've ever read. You are an absolute and utter moron.

ED JUAIRE,

Very few of those children died.

Guns are exponentially more deadly than knifes.

If Adam Lanza had used a knife, less people would be dead.

Your whole argument was just debunked in 3 sentences.

This is the 'line' these nutjobs have been told to use. All the way up the line from the gutter - fox Fake news, hateful Huckabee and the head gun sellers, the NRA. Their teeny tiny little brains can't handle facts in any form and choose to get on this board and send their letters in to prove how utterly ignorant and insane they are. This country is doomed if we don't start using some common sense instead of bumper sticker slogans and thoughts spewed from the mouths of money grubbing gun makers. I noticed since President Obama has been in office, it's not the number of bible sales that have gone up, or new church members, no it's GUN SALES -through the roof. So apparently their appeal to the mindless is working.

Excellent point, Mr. ED JUAIRE. Dumb arguments will be made by dumb people. You got that out of the way.

It should be mandatory for a principle to be armed and trained in the use of an automatic weapon. Also they should have a few gernades and a flame thrower on site to clean up the trash the next time a mad man of this ilk comes in. When was the last time you heard of a lunatic go into a crowded police station armed to the teeth? Ya think maybe it might be because they have the means to defend themselves. Duh

Over 10,000 deaths this year in US because of drunk drivers. Time to pull all beer off the shelves. And while we are at it lets ban all prescription drugs too.

Fairly recently actually.

That's a good idea if you're trying to reduce the death rate in the United States. That blew up in your face quickly! Try again.

Well, well, well, Scott C. Wilson; all religion, you choose one, many or none, all politics, agendas aside; there is a prevailing lesser regard for life in our society which breeds a lack of value deep in the heart. Is it about religion? I don't think so. It is about the illusion that society can try not to instill right and wrong in young people. Psychology says they have to find their own way and to disrupt that process is damaging to their ego. As we continue to depend, do your own thing as a motto or don't "correct" people, we will continue to spawn those who sink so low as to commit atrocities beyond our imagining. Sandy Hook Elementary is an example. Yes, the young man was troubled. But the greater question was not that he had access to guns, it is that he was in a position for whatever reason to act out his heinous acts without the needed bold interruption required to prevent it. From the religion perspective, it's not about God. It's about human free will which is acted out far too violently all the time. The final question becomes, how do we deal with it?

L4L, normal healthy humans don't commit such acts on their own (you can argue that under the right circumstances normal healthy humans can do some awful things-most Nazis that carried out atrocities in WWII were normal). This young man was not normal-borderline sociopath with an inability to connect emotionally with other humans. Such a person should not be taught to shoot nor be given access to weapons. Can such a thing be completely prevented? Probably not. But several unfortunate circumstances came together: his brain for whatever reason was not correctly developed, his mother chose to teach him to shoot and did not secure her guns, she owned a high capacity magazines for her semiautomatic, and the kid was familiar enough with the school to know how to get in. A few changes, and maybe this event would have never happened, or maybe had involved fewer deaths.

The peculiar nature of this boy's psyche is one that may not have a cure or treatment. Identifying such a person and then keeping him and others safe from his actions is important.

Oh, I just about forgot.......

The country of Germany had my video slide show blocked from them by the Universal Music Group. Viewers in Germany would get a message: 'This video is not available in your country'. I didn't like that because I used a remix (Fair Use Authorized, i thought) of a Moody Blues song, 'Say It With Love'. So, I have found music that works with my video, and, which meets all intellectual copyright guidelines for the same. Please view this video regarding the wonderful service great newspapers like The Chattanooga Times Free Press provides for all of us. kwo
