House fires in separate Ga. towns claim 2 lives

ATLANTA - Georgia fire investigators say a woman who died when her Lincoln County home went up in flames was the victim of an accidental fire.

Betty Moss was alone in her Lincolnton home when it caught fire shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday.

Glenn Allen is the spokesman for the state insurance department. Allen said authorities determined that the 64-year-old Moss had placed a space heater too close to a sofa, which caught fire.

The cause of a second fire that claimed a victim in Colquitt County is still under investigation. That fire started about 4:30 a.m. at a residence in Moultrie.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is attempted to identify the remains of the victim.

Investigators said neither home had a working smoke alarm.
