3 die in wreck in North Georgia

FAIRMOUNT, Ga. - Three people are dead and another injured after a two-vehicle crash on state Highway 53 near Fairmount.

One vehicle rolled over in the deadly Christmas Day wreck, Georgia State Patrol dispatchers said. The incident happened just before 6 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 53 and Mauldin Road.

Officers closed both lanes of Highway 53 at that intersection and began investigating the crash. The names of the victims and the condition of the injured person have not been released.

3 killed, 3 injured in fiery wreck

KNOXVILLE - Authorities say three people were killed and three others injured in a traffic accident in Campbell County.

According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, Joshua Peavley, 19, was heading west on General Carl Stinger Highway in LaFollette about 5:24 p.m. Monday when his pickup crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound vehicle before catching fire.

Peavley was killed, as well as the driver of the car he hit, Gary Mefford, 59, of Jacksboro, Tenn. Mefford's front-seat passenger, Brenda Mefford, 63, also died.

Other passengers in Mefford's car were: Phillip Lee, 57, and Alexandria Conley, 5, both of Jacksboro, and Joshua Ivey, 17, of Caryville. The extent of their injuries was not reported.

Authorities said the child was not properly restrained and none of the others were wearing seat belts.

Bond denied in girl's death

GRIFFIN, Ga. - A judge has denied bond for a 40-year-old man who was arrested in the death of a 9-year-old Spalding County girl.

WGCL-TV reported Shane Collett appeared in court Sunday. He was arrested on charges of murder, kidnapping and concealing a death.

Officials say Skylar Dials was reported missing Friday. Authorities found the girl's body in a wooded area about 2 a.m. Saturday.

Officials have not given details on how Dials was killed or how Collett was identified as a suspect.

Collett is being held in the Spalding County Sheriff's Office Detention Center.

Tea party disbands in Wilson County

LEBANON, Tenn. - The Wilson County Tea Party is disbanding.

The Tennessean reported organizer Sherrie Orange told supporters in an email last Monday that after three-plus years of work, the group was calling it quits immediately.

She wrote, "Everyone in this core group is tired and, as a result, we have made the very difficult decision that we can no longer continue running the Wilson County Tea Party."

Recently, the group fought the creation of a state-run health insurance exchange.
