THINGS I WISH MY KIDS WOULD ASK ME

EDITOR'S NOTE: Barry Courter has a 23-year-old son who graduated from college last year and an 19-year-old daughter who is a freshman in college.

Q: Dad, what are some lessons you learned looking for an apartment to rent?

A: There is no such thing as perfect so it's all about trade-offs. Also make a list of things you must have and things you'd like to have. Think it through. Some things first-time renters tend to gloss over or ignore are parking, the cost of utilities, laundry, noise, proximity to work or places you hang out and actual space. What appears cool or romantic at first can get old, and costly, in a hurry.
