Ansley fills out Dooley’s staff

KNOXVILLE — Less than 24 hours after adding a class of new players to his program on national signing day, Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley put the final touch on the coaching staff he’ll take into his important third season with the Volunteers.

Dooley tabbed Central Florida defensive backs coach and former Alabama graduate assistant Derrick Ansley as his sixth new assistant, a program source confirmed to the Times Free Press on Thursday. The former Troy University safety likely will share coaching duties in the secondary with Terry Joseph.

Which assistant handles which position, either cornerbacks or safeties, isn’t yet known, however.

UT did not officially announce the hire, but Ansley’s name already appears on the staff office directory board inside the Neyland-Thompson Sports Complex on UT’s campus. He’s no longer listed as a coach on UCF’s athletics website.

After completing his playing career with the Trojans, Ansley, who’s the second black on the Vols’ full-time staff, spent five years coaching defensive backs at Huntingdon College, a Division III program in Montgomery, Ala. He joined the Crimson Tide staff in March 2010 and spent two seasons working with new UT defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri, who was Alabama’s outside linebackers coach for three seasons.

The 30-year-old Ansley joined the Golden Knights’ staff in December, six days after Auburn’s Ted Roof was named defensive coordinator. After a month at UCF, though, Roof left George O’Leary’s staff to take the defensive coordinator at Penn State.

Joseph handled the entire secondary last season in addition to his duties as the Vols’ recruiting coordinator. In Dooley’s first season, Joseph coached cornerbacks and graduate assistant Peter Sirmon worked with the safeties. Sirmon was named a full-time assistant and coached linebackers for one season before he left with defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox to go to Washington last month.
