Lookout Mountain Drug Task Force Commander Larry C. Black is among the three candidates who have announced they will run for Catoosa County sheriff.
Black works for the Catoosa County Sheriff's Office, heading the drug task force that investigates illegal drug cases in Catoosa, Dade and Walker counties.
With 35 years of law enforcement experience, Black said he's qualified to lead the sheriff's office and has several ideas he wants to focus on.
"I think experience matters," he said. "I have the experience, education and qualification the other candidates don't have."
The other candidates for sheriff are Catoosa County Manager Mike Helton and Maj. Gary Sisk, now chief deputy. Longtime Sheriff Phil Summers is not seeking re-election.
If elected, Black said he wants to focus more in-depth on drug enforcement, burglary and theft prevention and domestic violence intervention.
Another of his proposed projects is adding a substation sheriff's office on the west side of the county, where officers could take complaints and file reports.
Before Black was appointed commander of the drug task force in 2008, he served as Fort Oglethorpe police chief for two years. He also worked as chief deputy under former Catoosa Sheriff Ronnie Bowman and various other jobs within the sheriff's office.
