SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Former Notre Dame High School softball standout Annie Sells of Chattanooga is one of the six members of the 2012 induction class of the Armstrong Atlantic State University Athletic Hall of Fame. Sells "put Armstrong softball on the map as the Pirates' best two-way player from 1999 to 2002," according to AASU's announcement release. She still holds the program's records for home runs (41), pitching wins (86) and strikeouts (875), and she was a four-time All-Peach Belt Conference selection and the league's player of the year and an NFCA Division II All-American in both 2000 and 2002. Her career winning percentage of .835 (86-17) remains among the best in NCAA history. The induction banquet is set for March 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Armstrong Center.

  • Freshman shortstop Shelby Robertson from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe went 3-for-4 with an RBI and junior catcher Bri Shoemake from Ooltewah hit a two-run double as Carson-Newman College won 7-2 in the first game of a home softball doubleheader Sunday against Bellarmine. Bellarmine won 6-2 in game two, when sophomore third baseman Sara Kelley from Ooltewah was 2-for-2 with a home run for Carson-Newman (3-1). Shoemake doubled and scored in the loss.

Golf

  • Red Bank High School senior Jake Keller is signing scholarship papers today to continue his golf career at Bryan College. "Carson-Newman and Tennessee Wesleyan also were possibilities, but I mainly just talked to Bryan," said Keller, the son of Moccasin Bend's head professional. "It's still a new team, and I like the idea of helping elevate their team and making them better, and I think they'll make me better, too. That will work out well for both of us. It's a small school, which I like, and I've heard good things about it academically." Keller just missed making the state tournament field last fall, losing in a playoff in the region tournament at Chatata Valley. "He was a very consistent performer for us and helped a lot of guys who didn't have as much experience," Red Bank coach Stefan Hunt said. "As a former district champ he provided a lot of great input and was a great example for the younger guys. I think Bryan is getting a steal: I don't think there's a kid who loves golf more than Jake Keller. They're getting a hard-working golfer with the mindset to definitely succeed at the next level."

Soccer

  • Very few college athletes have their numbers retired during the school years in which their careers end, but that happened last week to Jamie Achten, Lee University's two-time NAIA women's soccer player of the year and a key part of all four national championships in the Lady Flames' unprecedented run. Her No. 2 jersey was retired during halftime of the Cleveland school's basketball game Thursday. The Franklin, Tenn., resident was a first-team NAIA All-American all four years and the NAIA tournament offensive MVP in 2008 and '09. She holds the NAIA career assists record, twice was an NSCAA Scholar All-American and was the 2011 CoSIDA college division scholar-athlete of the year for her sport. In December she graduated summa cum laude in seven semesters with a degree in communications. She plans to join a Swedish professional team in the coming months. "I think Jamie would be successful in anything she endeavored to do," Lady Flames coach Matt Yelton said, "in that she is such a multitalented individual. Fortunately for us she chose to be a soccer player and bring those skills to Lee."

Baseball

  • CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- The NAIA's third-ranked Lee University baseball team beat visiting Hiwassee 11-0 on Monday, pushing the Flames' record to 4-0. Lee pitchers James Rechenbach, Mike Fasolo and Kyle Briner combined on a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and five walks, and James Fowlkes was 2-for-3 with a triple and four RBIs. Corey Davis was 3-for-4 and scored twice, Blake Barber was 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs and Roberto Duran also had two RBIs for the Flames.

Basketball

  • SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Sewanee defeated two-year school Georgia Northwestern Technical College 61-47 in men's basketball Monday. Tyler Brown led the balanced Tigers (12-9) with 11 points. Ben Patton and Bud Todd had 11 each for the Bobcats (7-15), who got eight rebounds from Justin Dempsey.
