Bennett calls it the way he sees it
I check out Clay Bennett's cartoons every day, and I think they are great. So he steps on a toe now and then, so what. He is very talented and witty and we need to laugh at ourselves now and then. He calls it the way he sees it, so "get over it."

Gruesome photos too much to handle
I'm all for trying to keep people healthy and safe, but the U.S. government wanting to put gruesome pictures on cigarette packages goes too far. What next, photos of bypass surgery on junk-food wrappers?

Elect Haynes in District 3
On March 6, the people of the 3rd District will elect and not appoint a commissioner to represent them.
My father used to always say, "You are never too old to learn something stupid." It has been reported by email that Marty Haynes would support annexing the Hixson and Middle Valley area. Nothing could be further from the truth.
We have known Marty and his family for many years and know them to be honest and hard-working people.
We would urge the people of the 3rd District to give Marty your support and let him give back to the area he grew up in and loved so much. We are confident he will represent the Hixson and Middle valley area with honesty and integrity.

Nation needs good leaders to stay good
Alexis de Tocqueville said "America is great because America is good and if America ever ceases to be good America will cease to be great.
One of the frontrunners for the Republican nomination for president is unfair to the government and his fellow citizens because he does not pay taxes on part of his earned income. It may be legal, but it is unfair and unethical. The other frontrunner has had serious moral and ethical problems most of his adult life.
Each of these candidates runs political ads in which the other is attacked by charges that are lies.
The serious question is: Can America continue to be good unless America elects good leaders?

Individuals need to step to plate
An unusually thoughtful letter (Feb. 6) notes that we cannot solve the abortion issue by arguing about it. This is certainly true, and it is good to have someone call our attention to the fact. But when the writer claims that it "...will take society..." (working) to eliminate the reasons for aborting a child, I must suggest further thought.
Sadly, when "society" is invoked, this absolves each of us, as individuals, of any personal responsibility. So then we expect others to solve the problem.
Also, the writer's noted "reasons" for terminating a pregnancy failed to include the most common reason, by far, for aborting: Inconvenience.

Also, the writer's noted "reasons" for terminating a pregnancy failed to include the most common reason, by far, for aborting: Inconvenience.
Curious to know what a man's definition of "inconvenience" would be when it pertains to pregnancy.
I seriously doubt anyone has an abortion out of "convenience." That's a snide and self-satisfied assumption by one who will never be gotten pregnant.
The real issue is whether the government can mandate what women can do with their own bodies. Every woman I know is capable of making procreative decisions for herself. And, if she isn't allowed even that right, then what does "freedom" mean?
moonkat, just what is the reason when people have unguarded sex and the woman gets pregnant and a child at that time is just not good timing for her or for her family to raise? So she just gets an abortion. What is NOT of convenience about that scenario? I know you will have me state statistics on that. Small problem, the guarded information by places who do abortions on demand. What a joke, "the government can mandate what women can do with their own bodies." It seems it is okay for the government to mandate what some women and men can do with theirs ie. government mandated healthcare. One day it will be clear how this all falls in the larger scheme of things and we likely will find ourselves on the not so good side. But by golly, we have freedom don't we?
Statistics show that the two most given reasons are A) woman too young to support and raise a child (ie teens, students with no source of income) and B) poor families that cannot support the child. Where is "convenience" in that?
If men could get pregnant abortion would be free and available everywhere.
