Obama taps financial adviser for TVA board
The Obama White House on Thursday nominated a Bowling Green, Ky., financial adviser to fill a vacancy on TVA's nine-member board.
Peter Mahurin, chairman of Hilliard Lyons Financial Services for the past four years, will fill one of the three TVA director jobs vacated at the end of 2011. Former Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan, also of Kentucky, left the TVA board in December.
Mahurin, a graduate of Western Kentucky University, has worked for Hilliard Lyons since 1968. He is on the boards of Houchens Industries, Albany Bancorp, Cecelia Bancorp, Gray Construction, Jackson Financial, and the Governors Scholars of Kentucky.
Mars to make bars 250 calories or less
NEW YORK -- Snickers bars may soon satisfy you a bit less.
Mars Inc., the makers of popular candy brands including M&M's and Twix, will stop making chocolate products that exceed 250 calories by the end of next year.
That means king-sized versions of the company's chocolate bars will disappear from candy aisles. The privately-held company also makes Milky Way, 3Musketeers, Bounty and Kudos bars.
Mars may not have to make radical changes to reach its goal, however; a standard Snickers bar currently has 280 calories. A package of Twix and a bag of peanut M&M's each clock in at 250 calories.
The company first posted the goal on its website in September of last year, but the plans got renewed attention after media organizations reported on it this week.
