Chattanooga firefighters rescued pets and extinguished a fire that burned half a dozen homes at Mountain Creek Apartments this afternoon.

No residents have been reported injured at 936 Mountain Creek Road, but two firefighters were taken to the hospital with heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation, according to fire department spokesman Bruce Garner.

The Red Cross was on hand soon after the blaze was brought under control to help residents who are displaced. Garner said five or six apartments were damaged by fire, but more also were damaged by water and smoke.

Firefighters made “trench cuts” through the roof and walls of the three-story apartment building to thread hoses to fight the flames that were licking between walls.

Garner said the fire didn’t spread further in the multi-apartment building because of a built-in firewall.

He said firefighters saved several dogs and cats, and at least one bird.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
