Wesleyan outslugs Cumberland, 14-9

Anthony Biox went 3-for-4 with two home runs, seven RBIs and four runs scored as Tennessee Wesleyan defeated Cumberland 14-9 in a matchup of ranked NAIA baseball teams Tuesday in Athens. The game was moved up a day to avoid expected rain today.

Stephen Branca also was 3-for-4 for 18th-ranked TWC (12-5), with a homer, a double, three RBIs and three runs, while Jordan Guida was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Taylor Oldham was 2-for-4 with a homer. Sam Lind and Josh McGee each was 3-for-5 for No. 7 Cumberland, with two and one homer and three and two RBIs.

Lee 10-13, Milligan 1-0: At Cleveland, Jose Samayoa and James Rechenbach combined to pitch a five-hitter and Dustin Lawson and two relievers followed with a two-hitter as the third-ranked Flames rose to 18-2. Samayoa struck out nine batters in six innings.

Roberto Reyes was 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs, Brady Renner was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs scored, Edmanuel Rivera homered and drove in three runs and Blake Barber was 2-for-2 with two runs in the first game for Lee. Mike Moore had three RBIs in the second game, when Preston Scoggins was 2-for-2 with a homer and three runs and Moore, Barber and Reyes each scored twice.

Cleveland State 4-3, Georgia Perimeter 2-0: At Cleveland, the Cougars pulled off the impressive junior college sweep with Cody Commons and Chase Edwards each going 2-for-3 and scoring a run and Damo DeMatteo belting a two-run homer in the opener and J.D. Cowart going 2-for-2 with a two-run single in game two.

Ethan Davis, Tyler Kilgore and Thomas Huddleston combined to pitch a five-hitter before Zack Taylor, Hunter Hammond and Ross Spurgeon fashioned a three-hitter for Cleveland State (8-4).

Covenant 9, Berry 7: At Mount Berry, Ga., the visiting Scots scored four runs in the seventh inning and three in the eighth to overcome a 6-2 deficit. Chris Rollins was 3-for-4 and scored three runs and Will Cleland and Jonathan Carter each batted in two for Covenant (4-4). Demarius Johnson pitched the last three innings for the win.

Lincoln Memorial 16-5, Bryan 9-3: At Harrogate, Tenn., the NCAA Division II team knocked the NAIA's Lions to 14-4 in the games moved up from today to beat the forecast rain. Curt Fuqua had five RBIs and Gelson Perez and Nick Pressley had four each in the first game for LMU, and Joseph Horsley and Cody Baker had two RBIs apiece in the rematch.

Billy Veal was 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs, Shane Clawson and Josh Harris also homered and Harris and Tyler Latham had three hits apiece in game one for Bryan, and Clawson was 2-for-3 with two RBis and Kevin Layne was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run in game two.
