UTC's Jaeger atop St. Pete NYI event

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior golfer Stephan Jaeger, who prepped at Baylor School, owns the lead in the 86th New Year's Invitational after two rounds at the St. Petersburg Country Club. He shot a 7-under-par 65 and is at 10-under 134 through Friday, leading by four shots over three players. Former Baylor teammate Jay Vandeventer from Bristol, Tenn., is nine shots back.

Basketball

• CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Lee University swept visiting William Carey in a Southern States Athletic Conference basketball doubleheader Friday evening, 65-41 in the women's game and 61-54 in the men's. Mary Jackson had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Flames (13-1, 5-0), ranked ninth in NAIA Division I, and Rachel Lockhart and Karley Miller each scored 11 points. Jenna Adams had four blocked shots with nine points and Kally Eldridge made four steals. For the Lee men (8-3, 3-2), Ryan Westbrooks and Duran Blue scored 16 and 15 points with 4-of-5 and 5-of-7 3-point shooting, while Tyrone Caldwell had seven assists with nine points, Josh Henley corralled nine rebounds and Patrick Shaughnessy and Johnny Godette blocked six and five shots. Roderick Little had 16 points and four steals for the Mississippi team (7-7, 4-1).

• Margaret Cross scored 22 points as Covenant College defeated visiting Pensacola Christian 60-48 in women's basketball Friday. That avenged a four-point loss at the Florida school on Dec. 10. Jessica Chittenden and Jessie Blankenship scored 11 points apiece and grabbed 10 and eight rebounds for Covenant (3-7), Blankenship also making four steals. Ashley Antuna had 18 points, 10 rebounds and five steals for Pensacola (1-13).

• Heather Gibson and Cody Houck had 22 and 15 points and eight rebounds apiece in Tennessee Wesleyan's 83-77 women's basketball loss Thursday at Bluefield, and Candace Cain scored 12 points. That left the Lady Bulldogs 8-6 overall, 2-2 in the Appalachian Athletic Conferenc. Desmond Crisp scored 26 points and E'Jay Ward and Quincy Scates added 16 and 15 points for the Bulldogs (9-8, 3-1) in a 100-84 defeat, Scates with nine rebounds and Ward with five assists.

• UTC men's assistant basketball coach Brent Jolly will be the guest speaker for the Mocs Club's "Breakfast With the Coach" this morning at 8:30 at Wally's Restaurant on McCallie Avenue. The public is invited to attend and order off the menu.
