Local high school basketball players Cordell James and C.J. Reese of McCallie and Chadarryl Clay of GPS recently received 2012 McDonald's All-America nominations. The final rosters of 24 boys and 24 girls chosen to compete in this year's McDonald's All-American Games will be televised on ESPNU on Feb. 9 at 5 p.m.

The 35th boys' game will tip off on March 28 at 9:30 p.m. EDT from Chicago's United Center and will be telecast on ESPN. The 11th girls' game will be at 7 on ESPNU.

Proceeds from the games will benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana.

GPS in Showcase

The GPS basketball team will be taking part Saturday in the fourth Girls Night Out Showcase at Fayetteville, Ga.

This year's Girls Night Out, which has grown into a two-day event and starts today, features 19 teams from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. Proceeds are forwarded to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Coach Susan Crownover, whose Bruisers won the TSSAA Division II-AA state championship last season, said she received an email invitation from a Showcase administrator who was offering spots to various state-championship and highly rated teams across the Southeast.

GPS (16-3) plays Potter's House Christian Academy from Jacksonville, Fla., at 6 p.m.

"We needed to find a game, so we thought we'd go down there and see what it was like," Crownover said. "Who knows? We might get it right in the mouth."

Shelton resigns

Signal Mountain soccer coach Pam Shelton has resigned from her position after four seasons.

"The school administration failed to properly address and rectify a situation concerning a Signal Mountain High School student-athlete's participation on a varsity sports team and the subsequent harassment of the student-athlete by the coach of the varsity sports team," Shelton said via text message.

"The incident was brought to the attention of the high school administration over a year ago and on multiple occasions."

Shelton said she felt she could no longer work there under the circumstances. The student-athlete involved was not a soccer player. She notes that she will still reside in Signal Mountain.

Her Lady Eagles were ranked in each of the last two seasons, in both occasions falling in the district semifinals -- in 2010 to Chattanooga Christian and this past season to Notre Dame, both on penalty kicks after ties. They do return rising senior forward Becca Blevins, an all-state selection this past season.

Soddy-Daisy hosts

The Soddy-Daisy girls' bowling team will host Spring Hill in a TSSAA state sectional Saturday at noon at Holiday Bowl Hixson, where the Soddy-Daisy boys will face defending state champion Smyrna at 3 p.m. Monday.

Columbia Central will host the Walker Valley girls Saturday and the Sequatchie County boys Monday, both at 2 EST. Winners advance to next week's state tournament in Smyrna.

Barker over 1,000

Sequatchie County senior guard Melanie Barker went over 1,000 points in her career in a recent game against Bledsoe County. Barker, who will play for Lee University in the fall, has played in only four games this season after tearing ligaments in her right ankle early in the season.
