SoCon breakdown

Deep 3

1. Conflict resolved — UNC-Asheville and the Southern Conference agreed earlier this week that the conference will move a first-round game of the women’s tournament to an off-site location if UNCA needs its Kimmel Arena to host the championship game of the Big South Conference men’s tournament. That game would be played in the Justice Center on March 3 if the Bulldogs need their home gym.

2. Successful sitting — Wofford senior forward Drew Crowell began his career with Noah Dahlman, Terry Martin and Johnson, but behind three of the best players in Terriers history he rarely played. So he reluctantly redshirted two seasons ago and averaged just 6.5 minutes last year. This season, he’s averaging 28.5 minutes, nine points and 5.1 rebounds per game.

3. Just one day — The Citadel is in a three-game string of having just one day of practice to prepare for its next opponent. The Bulldogs had Friday to prepare for an 80-51 loss at Davidson on Saturday, then Sunday to prepare for a double-overtime loss at Georgia Southern, took Tuesday off and had Wednesday to prepare for Wofford.

SoCon Spotlight

Appalachian State (8-10, 4-4) at UNC Greensboro (6-14, 4-4)

When: Tonight at 7

Where: Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum

Television: None

Heading into the game ... UNCG and ASU are tied for second place in the North Division, a half-game behind Elon. Only Davidson is hotter than UNCG’s Spartans, who have won four straight games after beginning the season 4-14. The Mountaineers beat Western Carolina by 12 after losing their two previous games.

The Spartans win if ... Junior guard Derrell Armstrong continues the hot streak that he’s been on. The SoCon player of the week scorched UTC for 29 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the arc after entering the game with five 3s all season. He followed that with 27 points in a last-second 61-60 win against Samford.

The Mountaineers win if ... They dominate the post and slow the game just a tick. Both teams like to run and it’s the Spartans’ best style, but ASU has a big advantage in a half-court game because of its size and experience.

The X-factor is ... Carolina Pride. Both ASU coach Jason Capel and UNCG coach Wes Miller played at North Carolina. Capel graduated in 2002 and Miller graduated in 2007, making this a matchup between two of the youngest coaches in NCAA Division I basketball.
