GPS's Maynord wins state bowling title

Girls Preparatory School senior Kara Maynord won the TSSAA Division II individual bowling championship this morning at the Smyrna (Tenn.) Bowling Center, and the Bruisers won in the team quarterfinals along with McCallie and both Soddy-Daisy teams.

The Soddy-Daisy girls won 18-9 over Wilson Central, the Trojans won by the same score over Dobyns-Bennett, McCallie won 15-12 over Lausanne and GPS won 25-2 over Pope John Paul II.

Maynord is the first Chattanooga-area girl to earn a state individual title in the sport.

Maynord had the lowest pin total of the six Division II girls' finalists through Thursday's semifinals but made up a 120-pin deficit by winning all but one of her finals head-to-head matches and tying two-time defending champion Miranda Mott of Ensworth. Maynord ended up edging Mott in total pinfall, 1,851 to 1,824.

See Saturday's Times Free Press for more on Maynord's accomplishment and the team results.
