First-place TWC romps

The Tennessee Wesleyan women's basketball team recently moved into the NAIA Division II Top 25 and first place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, and Saturday the No. 20 Lady Bulldogs whipped No. 24 Union College in the second half and won 62-46 in Athens.

Cody Houck scored 22 points and Heather Gibson and Michelle Davis had 19 and 14 points and eight rebounds apiece for Wesleyan (16-6, 9-2). Candace Cain also controlled eight rebounds, and Leah Frazier had six assists and three steals. Lindsey Waters had 20 points for Union (16-6, 7-4).

Wesleyan also won the men's game, 100-96, as Desmond Crisp scored 26 points, Matt Harper and Quincy Scates added 20 each and Matt Harper tallied 15. E'Jay Ward had 10 assists and four steals.

The Lee University men's team, ranked 17th in NAIA Division I, lost 80-77 in overtime to undefeated and No. 1 Shorter in a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader in Cleveland, but the fifth-ranked Lee women won 71-58.

Hollie German had 21 points and Angela Spann and Mary Jackson added 15 and 10 for the Lady Flames (21-1, 13-0), and Kally Eldridge had 10 steals with nine pointsl. Robyn Foster had 16 points for the Lady Hawks (16-5, 8-3).

Walter Hill led four double-figure scorers for the Shorter men (21-0, 11-0) with 21 points, while former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga player Dante Harvey scored 14 and Anthony Banks an dC.J. Davis added 13 apiece.

Alex Wells and Steve Bennett scored 18 and 16 for the Flames (14-5, 8-4). Also for Lee, Duran Blue had 15 points and six assists, Tyrone Caldwell had nine assists, Ryan Westbrooks scored 10 points and Josh Henley and Johnny Godette had 11 and 10 rebounds.

Bryan's Lady Lions lost their AAC game at Columbia (S.C.) College, 66-59, despite leading by five points at halftime. Mercedes Owens scored 19 points off the bench and Anna Thomas had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Lions, who got 12 rebounds from Morgan Burnette and 10 points from Bethany McArthur.

Bryan committed 33 turnovers in the loss.

At Salisbury, N.C., former Cleveland High School standout Ish Sanders regained his scoring form for Carson-Newman with 21 points in the Eagles' 73-69 South Atlantic Conference win over Catawba. The Eagles led by 21 in the first half.

Georgia Northwestern fell 68-64 at Rossville to Macon State despite 17 points by Alex Miller, 14 by Ben Patton and 13 by Justin Dempsey.

Friday night at the University of Dallas, Sewanee's men lost 64-61 at the final horn on a 3-point shot by the Crusaders' Joe Stephens, who totaled 14 points. Sewanee's Tyler Brown matched his three 3s and seven rebounds and scored 19 points. The Sewanee women lost 73-66 despite 18 points and seven rebounds by freshman Kayla Sewell and five steals by Dana Middleton.
