• Name: Dayton Power Sports & Equipment; Tangled Hair Studio

• Location: 1461 Railroad St. in Dayton, Tenn.

• Contact: 423-468-9303, www.DaytonPowerSports.com; 423-285-5801 for Tangled Hair.

• Products and services: Country Clipper mowers and consignment sales, along with all-terrain and small engine repairs; haircuts, color treatments and nail designs

• Owner: David Newkirk, who moved from Michigan after his father's health declined, co-manages with family friend Joshua Tope. Tope's fiancee, Shari Barnes, owns the salon next door.

• Inspiration behind the name: Tope, an experienced mechanic with power sports and lawn mower repairs, used that as inspiration for their business' namesake, while a thesaurus gave Barnes the inspiration she needed.

• Startup costs: Newkirk said that the landlord had previously owned a similar business in their location, which helped with the investment costs for the sports equipment repair and retail shop.

• Biggest hurdle: For hair stylist Barnes, she said that finding an available and affordable space to rent presented a challenge initially. "We help each other's business," she said, about the building space shared with her fiancé and Newkirk's retail and repair business next door.

• Target market: Newkirk and Tope agreed that they'd wanted to provide Rhea County with nearby customer service, as the leading repair shop that's not more than 15 miles away, but that word has since reached to Bledsoe and Cumberland counties.

• Lesson learned: Barnes said that the obstacles with finding a location and advertising the new business has taught her to "keep on trucking" toward her future plans, which include a tanning spa in the near future.

• Five-year goal: Newkirk and Tope plan to expand and incorporate a showroom, even if small-scale, in the next five years.
