Here's the scoop: Chattanooga Market's annual Ice Cream Social is Sunday, coinciding with National Ice Cream Day.

For a $5 ticket, market visitors can sample ice cream from Bruster's, Mayfield, Ice Cream Show, Blue Bell and Nana's. After tasting all five, visitors may cast their votes for the Best Pure Flavor Ice Cream and the Best Ice Cream With Add-Ins.

Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Children's Home/Chambliss Shelter. The agency provides a shelter for abused or neglected children, child care for ages 6 weeks to 12 years, and recruiting and training for foster parents.

While savoring their samples, market visitors can buy produce and handmade products from local farmers and craftsmen.

"Produce is at the height of the season right now," said Melissa Siragusa, Chattanooga Market spokeswoman. She added that $9,000 in sales of peaches was rung up last Sunday.

"We still have peaches, corn, squash, zucchini and plenty of fruits," she said. "Plus the market is averaging about 150 vendors each week."
