Recalls this week: Swing sets, high chairs, saws

Children's items top the list of potentially dangerous products that have been recalled this week. Swing sets sold through major retail chains have been blamed for 13 injuries due to seats breaking away from the frame. Another recall involves high chairs with a design flaw that has led to more than 20 injuries.

Here's a closer look at these products and others recalled this week:

SWING SETS

DETAILS: Flexible Flyer Swing Sets manufactured by The Troxel Company of Moscow, Tenn. They were sold at Walmart, Toys R Us, Academy, other specialty stores and online nationwide from December 2011 through May 2012. The Flexible Flyer swing sets come in 11 different models, each with a seesaw attachment along with swings, bars or a slide. The model number can be found on a sticker located underneath the center of the top bar of each swing set unit. The swing sets were manufactured in the U.S.

WHY: The see saw seats can break away from the bolt fasteners during use, posing a fall hazard.

INCIDENTS: Troxel has received 1,232 reports of see saw seats breaking, resulting in 13 injuries to young children that included bumps, bruises and lacerations.

HIGH CHAIRS

DETAILS: Chicco Polly high chairs sold from January 2005 through July 2012 at stores including Babies R Us, Burlington Coat Factory, Buy Buy Baby, Shopko and Toys R Us, as well as online outlets. The Chinese-manufactured chairs were imported by Artsana USA Inc., of Lancaster, Pa. The chairs have pegs on the back legs intended for tray storage, a folding metal frame for storage, and a reclining seat.

WHY: Children can fall on or against the pegs on the rear legs of the high chair, resulting in cuts or bruises.

INCIDENTS: Artsana is aware of 21 reports of children getting injured. Four children got cuts serious enough to require stiches and one had a scratched cornea.

CAMERA BATTERY PACKS

DETAILS: Nikon digital SLR camera battery packs distributed by Nikon Inc. of Melville, N.Y. The battery packs were sold at camera, office supply and mass merchandise stores, in catalogs and on various websites nationwide from March through April 2012 in the United States. The Nikon EN-EL 15 rechargeable lithium-ion battery packs were sold with the Nikon digital SLR D800 and D7000 model cameras. The battery pack's model numbers are printed on the back. The battery packs were manufactured in Japan and China.

WHY: The battery packs can short circuit, causing them to overheat and melt, posing a burn hazard to consumers.

INCIDENTS: Nikon has received seven reports of incidents outside of the U.S. of the battery packs overheating. No incidents have been reported in the U.S. No injuries reported.

MITER SAWS

DETAILS: Miter Saws imported by Robert Bosch Tool Corp. of Mount Prospect, Ill. The saws were sold at Lowe's Home Centers nationwide and OC Tanner from January through April 2012. The model number of the SkilSaw 10-inch compound miter saw is on the lower right side of the name plate located on the motor housing. The SkilSaw logo appears at the top of the upper blade guard and on the dust collection bag. The miter saws were manufactured in China.

WHY: The lower guard can break and contact the blade during use, and someone using the saw could suffer cuts.

INCIDENTS: None reported

DECORATIVE LIGHTS

DETAILS: Miniature decorative light sets. The sets were sold at Family Dollar stories from September 2011 through December 2011. The sets have "200 Mini Lights" and "Multi Lights, Green Wire" printed on the red box. The product is identified by SKU (hash) 2211428 and UPC (hash) 049696720465, found on the back of the package.

WHY: The light sets do not meet the UL standard for this product, and pose a fire and shock risk.

INCIDENTS: Three reports of the lights overheating. No injuries or property damage reported.

GIRLS AQUA SOCKS

DETAILS: Old Navy toddler aqua socks for girls. The shoes were sold at Old Navy stores in the U.S. and at www.oldnavy.com from February 2012 through June. The slip-on shoes have pull-on tabs on both the front and back of the foot opening of the shoe. These aqua socks were sold in pink and purple in toddler sizes 5-11. They were made in China, and have the style number 896452, found on a small tag inside the socks.

WHY: This style of aqua socks provides less traction when worn on wet or smooth surfaces such as hardwood or tile. A toddler wearing the socks could slip or fall.

INCIDENTS: Two customers reported falls with minor injuries that did not require medical attention.
