A 37-year-old man was shot Monday night by Bradley County Sheriff's Office deputies after they say he refused to stop stabbing a woman.

Bill Forgey was taken to SkyRidge Medical Center in Cleveland with a single gunshot wound to the neck, said Kristin Helm, spokeswoman for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. He is listed in critical condition.

Heather Killen, 34, was stabbed multiple times in the chest and neck and taken to Erlanger hospital, where she is in stable condition, Helm said. She had called 911 multiple times to report that she was being held against her will in Forgey's vehicle, Helm said.

The case has been turned over to the TBI, which is standard procedure when law enforcement uses deadly force.

Helm said TBI has not yet established how Killen and Forgey know each other.

The shooting took place near the intersection of Springplace Road and Dalton Pike in Cleveland, where the man's vehicle had pulled into a convenience store, striking another parked vehicle and a guardrail, Gault said.

The suspect was hurting a female passenger and refused to obey deputies' commands to stop, Gault said.
