DALTON, Ga. - Author and storyteller Sherry Norfolk is the guest for the upcoming Let's "Tell-a-brate!" Story Jamboree presented by the Dalton-Whitfield County Library.
"Jamboree is a storytelling/literacy program designed for parents, caregivers, teachers, home-schoolers and children," according to a library news release. Participants will learn how storytelling builds reading, writing and communication skills and how to work with the common core curriculum through the use of storytelling, the release states.
The Aug. 7 program is in two locations: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Dalton-Whitfield Library, corner of Waugh and Cappes streets, and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gaston Community Center, MLK Jr. Drive at Frederick Street. Both programs are free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served.
Norfolk was named 2010 Outstanding Artist in Residence by the Tennessee Arts Commission, Value Plus Schools. She has participated in storytelling conferences worldwide. With her husband, Bobby, she has published five of the popular Anansi Ghanaian folk tales, as well as the award-winning "Billy Brown and the Belly Button Beastie."
She will have books available for sale and author signing following her presentation.

ERWIN, Tenn. - A former East Tennessee sheriff is set to go on trial today on two felony charges.
Former Unicoi County Sheriff Kent Harris stepped down from office this year after being indicted on charges of official misconduct, tampering with evidence, criminal simulation, theft over $1,000 and attempted aggravated assault.
The Johnson City Press reported that today's trial will deal only with the criminal simulation and theft charges. According to court documents, the charges stem from Harris' asking for and receiving money from the county for vehicles that were actually donated to his department.
COVINGTON, Ga. - A body found in the trunk of a burning car in Atlanta has been identified as a missing Newton County man.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office said 49-year-old Gregory Vernon Harris died because he was smothered. His death has been ruled a homicide.
The Rockdale Citizen reports that the car was discovered July 14 in the backyard of a vacant house. Investigators said the Infiniti was registered to Harris, who had been reported missing by the Newton County Sheriff's office a day earlier.
Harris' sister had alerted local authorities because the family was unable to reach her brother. Authorities said the sister went to check on her brother at his home.
