McCallie sophomore Gordon Hulgan became dazed after a fall at home the morning of the Division II East/Middle region tournament.

Coach Tony Meyers feared a concussion and called Hulgan's mother, who took her son to be checked out. She later reported to Meyers that Hulgan broke a bone in his foot but would still play if he could.

He did. Hulgan shot a 3-over-par 75 while hobbling around the golf course to help McCallie win that championship.

"That was some serious adversity," Meyers said. "I already had our sixth man ready to go because our fifth guy had a broken finger."

Hulgan played a bigger role in the Blue Tornado winning the Division II-AA state championship less than two weeks later.

He shot a 3-under 69 on the first day. The second day was washed out, leaving Hulgan as the medalist at Willowbrook Golf Course. Hulgan said he was 3 under through 16 holes on the second day.

"We went out to eat, then we sat back and relaxed," he recalled, "but when we went to school the next day, there were a bunch of 'Congrats.' I was pretty shocked. I didn't think I could do it."

Most coaches would have panicked when learning that their best player hurt himself the morning of a region championship tournament.

McCallie's Meyers had a backup plan, but he didn't have to use it because Gordon Hulgan was able to limp around with a broken foot.

The Blue Tornado won that day. Then they went on to win the Tennessee Division II-AA state championship with a 5-under-par 283 that topped runners-up Battle Ground Academy and Christian Brothers by 19 shots.

"The way we ended the season was tremendous," Meyers said. "We put it all together on the same day, and it was special to watch."

The Tornado started the season with a runner-up finish in the Baylor Preview and tied for fourth at 304 in the City Prep championship.

"We had our ups and downs along the way," Meyers said. "The kids believed we could finish strong after we won the region. Then they started pushing and chasing each other. They were competitive within the game.

"It was a fun year."
