Area juniors over par in AJGA event

Heritage High School freshman Ben Rebne topped a 3-wood approach from the 17th fairway in the opening round of the Evitt Foundation RTC Junior All-Star tournament Tuesday at WindStone.

Then he laughed along with playing competitor and friend Scott Stevens of Chattanooga about the shot. That's all they could do.

Stevens opened the 54-hole tournament with a 5-over-par 75, which has him tied for 32nd. Rebne shot a 79 and Ooltewah resident Oliver Simonsen shot a 91. Katherine Holmes of Signal Mountain is tied for 15th in the girls' division after shooting 80.

"We didn't talk much in the beginning," Stevens said. "We had some funny conversations in the end."

Newnan, Ga., residents Jordan Daniel and Annie Swords lead the girls at even-par. Mitchell Meissner of San Antonio and Terrence Zhang from Orlando, Fla., lead the boys at 66.

Area aces

Jerry Reiver now has two holes-in-one on No. 17 at Brainerd. The second one came last Wednesday while he was playing with Don Wilson, Jim Dunn and Wales Standifer. Reiver used a 7-iron for the 153-yard shot.

State Women's Am

Second-seeded Mary Alice Murphy of Lookout Mountain beat Ellen Mitchell of Memphis 2 up in the first round of match play in the Tennessee Women's Amateur on Tuesday at Gallatin's Foxland Harbor.

Top-seeded defending champion Kendall Martindale of Jefferson City won 7 and 5. Chattanooga's Blakesly Warren beat Jean Roise of Crossville 8 and 7. Manchester's Jenna Burris defeated Lee University player Madison Alexander 3 and 2, but Lee's Courtney Shelton from Franklin won by that score over a Collierville golfer. Senior standout Maggie Scott from Charleston and Signal Mountain's Lauren Johnson lost their matches.

Benton's Lydia Triplett was a 4-and-3 winner in the second flight, and Stacie Bates of Decherd beat Athens' Pam Morrow in the third flight.
