State crews mowing in area
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -- Crews from the Georgia Department of Transportation will be mowing on area highways this week. Work is scheduled for today through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., weather permitting.
In a news release, GDOT said crews will be in the following areas:
Chattooga County: State Routes 100 and 114
Dade County: State Routes 301, 136 and 189
Floyd County: State Routes 20 and 100
Gordon County: State Route 136
Murray County: State Routes 225 and 286
Polk County: State Routes 6 and 100
Walker County: U.S. 27/state Route 1
Whitfield County: State Routes 3, 201 and 286.
Amphitheater built of debris
ALBERTA, Ala. -- Construction of an amphitheater built mostly from tornado debris has wrapped up in an Alabama city devastated by a twister last year.
The Tuscaloosa News reported some volunteers camped out in tents in Alberta during the weeklong project at Jaycee Park. One volunteer, University of Alabama student Steve Crosby, said he's glad to "put something back" in a city where so much was destroyed.
The amphitheater features a stage surrounded by seating for 75 people covered by multicolored shade cells supported by carved columns.
The nonprofit Pomegranate Center is responsible for the project. It says about 75 percent of the materials used in the construction came from buildings damaged by the tornado that leveled much of the Alberta area.
Tennessee driver killed in wreck
ELKTON, Ky. -- Police say a Tennessee woman killed in a crash Saturday in southern Kentucky was trying to avoid a deer carcass on the road.
Julie A. Roberts, of Clarksville, swerved to avoid the deer and a dog but lost control of her SUV, and it overturned in Todd County. The Leaf-Chronicle reported Roberts was not wearing a seat belt and she was thrown from the vehicle.
A passenger in the SUV was hurt and was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center with injuries not considered life-threatening. She also was not wearing a seat belt.
Man drowns in Chattahoochee
SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- Authorities say a 22-year-old metro Atlanta man was found dead Sunday after he apparently drowned while trying to swim across the Chattahoochee River.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported the Georgia Department of Natural Resources identified the man as Girona L. Pye, of Woodstock. Authorities said he was with friends when he vanished under the surface.
