All of the Mocs except Robb were to play today's round at Glasgow-Gailes Links; he was playing at Troon. The top 64 players qualify for match play, which begins Wednesday at Royal Troon.
• ALBANY, Ga. -- Colby Hipp of Chatsworth is in a seven-way tie for fourth place, one shot out of second, in the Georgia Junior Championship golf tournament at Doublegate Country Club after a first-round 71 Monday. Andy Shim of Duluth, who reached match play in the U.S. Junior Amateur last year, shot a 66.
Auto Racing
• Richard Davenport, a 68-year-old used car dealer from Rome, Ga., took first place and $1,500 in the Super Pro class Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. He won with a 5.30-second burst on a 5.28 dial-in on the eighth-mile course in a 1967 Plymouth Barracuda powered by a 598 Chrysler engine. Tony Helms of Fort Oglethorpe was second in a 454 Chevy dragster. Strip Hall of Famer L.C. Bigham from Tunnel Hill again won the Foot Brake top prize in a '72 Dodge Dart Swinger with his son David second in a '69 Dodge; Melvin Croft was third. Jacob Clayton from Ooltewah was first and Matthew Day from LaFayette second in Junior Dragster.
Soccer
• The former East Ridge Soccer Association, now transplanted as the Express Regional Soccer Association, announced Monday that Tennessee Temple University coach Kenrick Liburd is its director of coaching. Liburd, who grew up playing soccer in England, played college soccer and basketball in the United States, first at Bellevue University and then at Maine-Machias. He ran youth soccer clinics in Maine and was a volunteer assistant for a high school team that won its first state championship. Also with experience in volleyball, he now coaches men's soccer and women's basktball for Temple. "Kenrick is a unifier. He is a natural leader on and off the pitch, someone who is both gentle and bold," Southeast Whitfield coach Jamison Griffith said in the ERSA release. "I have learned a great deal from him and look with great anticipation as he helps to lead the Express Regional Soccer Association." Said Liburd: "These guys have a winning track record, and I am very excited they asked me to come on board to help develop soccer in Chattanooga and the North Georgia region." He will lead tryouts at the Rossville Recreation Center on June 30.
Softball
• The Tennessee-Georgia high school all-star softball competition, which dates to 1998 and is the oldest in the local series, will take place Wednesday with a doubleheader at Frost Stadium starting at 6 p.m. Tennessee's 10-under Frost Falcons and the 12-under Chattanooga Force will take on Georgia Twisters teams in both age groups in hour time-limit games at 3:30 and 4:30, respectively. "We feel like by having the younger kids play before the older girls, they'll get the chance to watch the older girls play, and as they continue to play softball, that will give them something to reach for when they become seniors," event coordinator Bobby Hudgens said. Retiring Soddy-Daisy coach Clifford Kirk, coming off directing his team to the Class AAA state championship, will be Tennessee's head coach. He will be assisted by fellow state-winning coaches in Baylor's Kelli Smith (Division II-AA) and Grace Academy's Tina Walker (Class A). Team Georgia will be guided by Dana Mull of Class A state champion Gordon Lee along with her Lady Trojans assistant Norma Nelson, who is also head coach at Ooltewah during the TSSAA season. Admission is $5. Cost for students ages 6-12 is $3, and children under 6 will be admitted free. The Tennessee-Georgia baseball game is tonight at Ooltewah, starting at 6.
Basketball
• Morehead State University announced the first three recruits for new men's basketball coach Sean Woods on Saturday. One of them was recent McCallie School graduate Cordell James, whose signing already was reported locally. "We are very excited about these three young men," Woods said in the release, including junior point guard Taariq Muhammad from the Atlanta area and 6-foot-11 center Chad Posthumus from Manitoba, also a junior transfer. "They are all very talented basketball players and high-character people." Specifically of James, Woods said, "Cordell is a coach's jewel. He is a hard worker and overachiever who is explosive, strong and heady."
