CALHOUN, Ga. -- Although he's played quarterback for only one season, Taylor Lamb already has a state championship ring, and now the Calhoun High School quarterback has decided on a college home.

The reigning Best of Preps Offensive Player of the Year after leading the Yellow Jackets to a 15-0 record and Georgia Class AA championship, Lamb has committed to sign in February with South Alabama. The Jaguars, coached by former Alabama and Atlanta Falcons receiver Joey Jones, will be joining the FBS Sun Belt Conference in 2013.

Lamb said it took just one visit to the Mobile, Ala., campus to make up his mind.

"The coaches kept saying they wanted me to visit, and that pretty much did it," the all-state quarterback said. "The coaches are great and the campus is close to the beach. The program is headed in the right direction, and it just seemed like the place for me."

In 15 games last year after transferring from Greenville, S.C., Lamb completed 269 of 406 passes for 3,635 yards, 40 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He ran for 261 yards and eight touchdowns.

He also had scholarship offers from Memphis, Georgia State, Liberty and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Coaches from Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and Middle Tennessee State have visited Calhoun to see about him.

Hal Lamb -- Taylor's uncle and Calhoun coach -- praised the decision and said that a very deep 2013 quarterback class was the only thing keeping his nephew from a Southeastern or Atlantic Coast conference scholarship at this point.

"Every ACC and SEC school except N.C. State has their quarterback already committed for that class," the coach said. "There are not many positions open, and when South Alabama said the first quarterback they offered to commit would get the one spot they had, Taylor quickly accepted it. I think it's a great fit for him."

South Alabama, which went 6-4 last season as an FBC independent after going 17-0 in its first two seasons playing smaller schools, has future nonconference games scheduled with Tennessee (2013), Georgia (2014), North Carolina State (2015) and LSU (2016).
