The mercury hit 106 in Chattanooga today, tying the all-time high and breaking the previous record on this date 102 set in 1936.
Across Tennessee, more record-breaking daily temperatures are expected through the weekend and into Independence Day as a blistering heat wave smothers much of the state, according to the Associated Press.
Chattanooga's all-time record high temperature of 106 was posted on July 28, 1952, according to the National Weather Service.
Records began in 1879.
The National Weather Service posted a heat advisory Friday for all of Tennessee except the Cumberland Plateau, warning of dangerously hot conditions and urging caution when people are outside.
