Maps now are available online of proposed school zoning changes for residents of East Hamilton County.
Hamilton County Schools officials released the maps Wednesday following their unveiling at Tuesday’s rezoning meeting at East Hamilton Middle/High School. Hundreds of parents showed up to question the changes and see whether their children would stay within their current school boundaries.
The rezoning proposal is the school system’s effort to alleviate overcrowding at East Hamilton and several area elementary schools.
Beginning next fall, many East Hamilton neighborhoods will be rezoned for Ooltewah Middle, Hunter Middle or Ooltewah High.
But current East Hamilton students will be able to stay under a grandfather provision, though no transportation will be provided for those students. Some elementary students will be grandfathered in, though those rules vary by grade.
Schools up for a fall 2013 rezone include Ooltewah Elementary, Snow Hill Elementary, Birchwood Elementary and Wallace A. Smith Elementary.
Apison Elementary, East Brainerd Elementary, Bess T. Shepherd Elementary, Westview Elementary and Wolftever Creek Elementary are planned to be rezoned in 2014.
