Man, 22, dies after mixing drinks

A 22-year-old Riceville, Tenn., man died Wednesday after drinking alcohol and energy drinks and possibly taking medication, police said.

Caleb T. Hixson died while in an ambulance on its way to Erlanger hospital from a North Chattanooga apartment complex, according to a news release from Chattanooga police spokesman Officer Nathan Hartwig.

Police and emergency medical services were called to Riverview Grande apartments on North Natchez Road after Hixson went into a bedroom and started wrecking the room, cutting himself on a piece of glass in the process, Hartwig said.

Hixson went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance and was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police.

There are no obvious signs of foul play, but investigators are conducting interviews and collecting evidence to rule out the possibility, Hartwig said.

The cause of death is unknown pending review by the Hamilton County medical examiner, and a toxicology test could take weeks, he said.

Third shooting in week reported

Chattanooga police are investigating the third shooting in a week.

Quinn Walker, 29, suffered a single gunshot wound to the thigh just after midnight Thursday, Chattanooga police spokesman Officer Nathan Hartwig said in a news release. Walker was taken to Erlanger hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Hartwig said.

He was shot while in a car at 735 Sylvan Drive and a spent bullet casing was found in the vehicle, police said.

It doesn't appear any of the shootings in the past few days are related, according to police.

On Tuesday, Darick Isom, 33, and Lymorris Martin, 54, were shot at an apartment at 2114 Windsor St. shortly after 11 p.m.

On Saturday, Honoria Vasquez Ramirez, 29, was shot in the head at 1508 E. 17th St. He was treated at Erlanger for the injury that was not life-threatening

The shot was fired from outside the residence and struck Ramirez inside after it penetrated an exterior wall.

Walker's shooting marks the 19th shooting with injuries this year in the city. This time last year, there were 10 shootings.
