University of Tennessee at Chattanooga athletics director Rick Hart decided to retain men's basketball coach John Shulman for another season on Friday.

Shulman met with Hart several times on Thursday and Friday and Hart came to the decision that Shulman is the best man to lead the program in the future.

"In some ways it was very similar to meetings we have at the end of others years, but there were some differences," Hart told the Times Free Press on Friday morning. "I needed to confirm that John was up to the challenge of taking our program down a path which is in the best interest of the program.

"He is, and that became clear to me."

UTC finished the past season 11-21 and 5-13 in the Southern Conference which dropped Shulman's eight-year career record to 132-127 overall and 71-71 in the SoCon.

Hart said finances did not factor into his decision. Shulman has two years remaining on a contract worth approximately $140,000 per year.

"We have a good view on the route we want to go," Shulman said. "I'm excited about getting back to doing what we do - defending, rebounding and being accountable off the court, not that we get very far away from that.

"We're going to go back to year No. 1."
