Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder has a new look at his new SEC school.
During his four seasons at Georgia from 2001 to '04, VanGorder had a hulking appearance with short hair and an optional mustache. Three months into his tenure at Auburn, the 52-year-old has long hair and a full mustache and is 25 pounds lighter.
"All everybody wants to talk about is my hair and mustache," a laughing VanGorder said. "It's unbelievable."
VanGorder cites his weight loss as a must following two back surgeries. He used to run but stopped once cartilage was removed from his right knee, and he has discovered bike riding as a suitable replacement.
The hair growth was a family thing -- two of his college-aged sons have shoulder-length hair -- and a result of last year's NFL lockout.
"I decided not to cut my hair until the lockout ended, and then [Dallas defensive coordinator] Rob Ryan gets all the attention," he said.
