Golfer Brooke Pancake from Chattanooga is the University of Alabama's female candidate for the Southeastern Conference's prestigious H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Postgraduate Scholarship. That recognizes the league's top senior student-athletes for their academic, sports and community-service accomplishments. Two years ago, Tennessee runner Phoebe Wright from Signal Mountain and Red Bank High School was the overall winner. Pancake, a four-time state champion while at Baylor, has a 4.0 grade point average at Alabama and will graduate in May, and she was a Capital One Academic All-America first-team member as well as a Golfweek and National Golf Coaches Association All-American as a player. A semifinalist at the U.S. Women's Amateur last year, she is on the 2012 USA Curtis Cup team. She has done volunteer work with The First Tee for youth golfers, Project Angel Tree, Soles4Souls, the Rise School and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
• BRADENTON, Fla. -- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golf team finished fourth in the Collegiate Match Play presented by Callaway with a 3-2 loss Tuesday to nationally fifth-ranked California at the Concession Golf Club. After Cal's Brandon Hagy won 4 and 2 over the Mocs' Liam Johnston and Joel Stalter won 3 and 1 over UTC's Benni Weilguni, the Mocs got even as senior Stephan Jaeger won 2 and 1 over 10th-ranked Max Homa and Steven Fox rallied from a quick three-hole deficit for a 1-up win over Michael Kim. Cal's Keelan Kilpatrick pulled out a 3 and 1 victory over Chris Robb in the last match completed. "I'm proud of how we competed this week," UTC coach Mark Guhne said in a school release. "We battled and had a chance to win the whole thing if a couple of things go our way. Everyone contributed." The Mocs will play Saturday and Sunday in the Linger Longer Invitational at Reynolds Plantation.
• Chelsea Krafft and Beth Harris combined to pitch a five-inning no-hitter in the first game and Harris went 5-for-6 with two home runs and nine RBIs as Covenant College beat visiting Rust 10-0 and 16-2 in a softball makeup doubleheader Monday. Morgan Booker was 2-for-3 and Grace Hooper drove in two runs in the first game, when Harris had both her homers and Krafft struck out eight batters in four innings. Christine Core was 3-for-3 and scored three runs in game two, when Harris got the pitching win, Jenni Jobe was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Courtney Wagoner was 2-for-2 and scored twice and Lauren Johns, Tatum Daniel and Booker each had two RBIs. Daniel was 1-for-1 with a triple.
• DAYTON, Tenn. -- Rogers State followed up a 3-2, 4-2 softball doubleheader sweep Monday at Tennessee Wesleyan by winning 6-0 and 6-5 Tuesday at Bryan. Bryan (7-19) got only one hit in the first game, but Courtney Combs had a two-run homer, Taylor Yates was 3-for-3 with an RBI single and Britney Hurst had a two-run double in the second defeat. Wesleyan, meanwhile, won its Appalachian Athletic Conference openers at Union, 7-6 in eight innings and 2-1, and is 4-16 overall.
• Sewanee goalkeeper Tommy Healy was the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men's lacrosse defensive player of the week for matches of March 12-18. The sophomore from Washington, D.C., made a total of 20 saves in wins over Otterbein and Berry. He stopped two direct shots in overtime against Otterbein.
• The Sewanee women's lacrosse team lost 14-10 Monday night at the University of Redlands in California. The Tigers (5-2) fell behind 12-2 before beginning a charge midway through the second half that featured five goals and an assist by Meg Welton and two goals by Olivia Vietor.
• Georgia Northwestern men's basketball forward Alex Miller from Gordon Central High School made the All-NJCAA Region XVII first team for the 2011-12 season, and Bobcats guard Ben Patton from Dade County was a second-team selection. Miller, a freshman, averaged 14 points and eight rebounds a game; Patton led the region in 3-point baskets, including nine in one game.
• The Choo-Choo City 13-Black volleyball team finished second this past weekend in the AAU Super Regionals in Nashville. Coach Dan Basler's team lost 25-22, 25-20 to Alliance 13 from Franklin, Tenn., in the final. The Choo-Choo City players are Falyn Blalock, Ashlieigh Cook, Sydney Eaker, Gabby Gray, Kinsey Hargis, Genna Howard, Libby Smith, Sarah Sumida, Nicole Terfloth and Lilly Turner.
