BOONE, N.C. -- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Michelle Fuzzard is well on her way to setting a couple of records for the Lady Mocs softball team, but she'll need the weather to cooperate today to make it official.
Fuzzard was 3-for-3 with two home runs and a UTC-record eight RBIs when storms halted the Southern Conference series opener in the top of the fourth inning against Appalachain State on Saturday. UTC leads the game 13-2, and Fuzzard will be at bat with the bases loaded when play resumes this morning at 10.
Nicole Osterman, Jessica Traxler and Sarah Beth Roberts also homered for the Lady Mocs.
UTC will need to get through the fifth inning to complete the victory and make the stats official. Weather permitting, the teams are scheduled to play two more games after that.
• Chattanooga State 16-9, Dyersburg State 0-0: At Dyersburg, the NJCAA's top-ranked Lady Tigers improved to 35-3, 4-0 in the TCCAA, as Ashley Czechner pitched a five-inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and Janna Scheff followed with another five-inning shutout while their teammates were totaling 20 and 11 hits.
Shelby Johnson was 5-for-5 for the day with three runs to go with her four hits in game one, when Marina Wilkerson homered on the first pitch and went 2-for-2. Andrea Dalton, Kortney Koroll and Andie Johnson each was 2-for-3 and Chelsea Burgess was 2-for-4 in game two.
• Lee 4-13, Brewton-Parker 3-5: At Cleveland, the NAIA's 15th-ranked Lady Flames rose to 28-5, 7-1 in the SSAC, with Brittany Balough (15-1) pitching a four-hitter with no earned runs allowed and Jessa Watts (10-3) adding a five-inning five-hitter with seven strikeouts. Lee survived seven errors in the doubleheader.
Ana Coscorrosa was 3-for-4 with two doubles and six RBIs in the two games, and Jennifer Ringle was 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored in game two, when Kelsey Barnes and Tabitha Farrow each was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
• Covenant 14-9, Wesleyan 0-7: At Macon, Ga., Jenni Jobe went 6-for-8 with two doubles, three stolen bases, five runs scored and two second-game RBIs as the visiting Lady Scots swept the GSAC doubleheader.
Morgan Booker tripled, doubled and batted in three runs and Beth Harris and Lauren Johns each was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the first game for Covenant (13-6, 6-3), and Meagan Hess and Coutney Wagoner each had three hits and two RBIs, Hess scoring three times, in game two. Chelsea Krafft (8-4) got both pitching wins, the second in relief, and totaled 17 strikeouts in eight innings.
• Rhodes 4-0, Sewanee 0-1: At Memphis, Erin Polena had three hits and Michelle Thibodeaux and Kayla Sewell added two each in game two of the SCAC doubleheader loss for the Tigers (1-8, 0-2).
FLAMES WIN TWO
Patrick Merkling and Jose Samayoa combined to pitch a two-hitter and Vince Spilker and two relievers combined on a four-hitter as Lee University beat visiting Brewton-Parker 2-0 and 15-3 in SSAC baseball Saturday.
Edmanuel Rivera was 2-for-2 and scored a run in the first game, when Jorge Saez was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for the Flames (33-4-1, 17-1). Roberto Reyes homered, singled and batted in four runs in game two, when Corey Davis and James Fowlkes had three hits and two RBIs apiece and Brady Renner, Riivera, Blake Barber, Roberto Duran and Fowlkes each scored twice.
• Bryan 8-5, Montreat 3-3: At Montreat, N.C., Shane Clawson was 5-for-8 with two doubles and the first pitching win and Zach Vick was 4-for-5 with three runs scored as the Lions swept their AAC doubleheader.
Billy Veal was 2-for-3 with two homers and Tyler Latham also had two RBIs in game one, and Doug Stroup was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in game two for Bryan (26-10, 8-4).
• Piedmont 15-8, Covenant 6-13: At Demorest, Ga., Covenant's Scots salvaged the third game of their GSAC series as Chris Rollins went 3-for-5 with a triple and five RBIs, Will Clelland and James Rollins went 4-for-5 and 3-for-5 with three runs apiece and Scott Gillespie drove in three and scored two in the finale.
David Lockwood and James Rollins each was 4-for-5 and Gillespie and Ben Chambers had two RBIs each in Saturday's first game for Covenant (10-10, 2-4).
• Sewanee 9, Worcester State 8: At Winter Haven, Fla., the Tigers rallied for their fourth win in a row in the Russ-Matt Invitational tournament, scoring five runs in the seventh and Wilson Nealy doubling in Alan Komorowski with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth.
Freshman Adam Schmidt got the pitching win, allowing one hit in two innings. Nealy was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and James Snover also doubled among three hits, with one RBI, for Sewanee (9-11).
