The Tin Man

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

REPUBLICANS HATE DAYLIGHT

For all members of the right wing tea bagging brigade, here's something you can all look up in the comfort of your own double wide - or single wide - home. Please research how the national debt grew under supply side republican presidents. This is not a trick question. These would include the years 1981 - 1993 and 2001 - 2009. If congress had allowed the Bush tax cuts to expire, as they were scheduled, our current recovery would be much stronger and national debt much lower.

Howl all you want but those are the facts.

Supply side - or trickle down - economics has been the single greatest cause of America's financial ruin, and only top shelf PR can spin this GOP economic catastrophe. Don't hurt the 'job creators,' they wail. Don't resort to 'class warfare' they sob. Don't look at the facts. It's not our fault. Don't blame us because we republicans hate blame the way vampires hate daylight.

They find it much easier to blame someone else. Heck, they were blaming Obama before he was sworn in as president and haven't let up.

The fact that Mitt Romney wants to slash the tax rate on rich people even MORE proves he is not qualified to run for dog catcher. Oh, I know he was governor of Massachusetts, but he doesn't want to dwell on that portion of his resume. Forget all that government take over of health care. Forget all that talk about being moderate and even progressive. Forget the fact that he didn't run for reelection because he would have lost.

Apparently the only policy Mitt advocates NOW, the one issue over which he is willing to go to the mattresses, is tax cuts for the rich. He promises to eliminate a cabinet post or three, cut off funding for Planned Parenthood (red meat for tin foil republicans) but who knows? He takes so many different positions on so many different issues it's literally impossible to know what he believes.

Except tax cuts for the rich.

The GOP is trying to peddle that load of horse manure this time because they want you to believe that THEY are very patriotic, THEY have an unfair tax rate, and THEY are the job creators.

And to make that fly they want you to believe that poor people are getting away with murder. Obviously the GOP is counting on voters being heartless and brainless cowards with very short memories.

But if Romney is elected we won't be able to just click our heels three times.

Don't worry Toto! The GOP won't let Obama eat you! As for supply side economics, it worked far better than anything our leftist president has attempted. Obama has admitted that his tax policy is not intended to expand the economy but to redistribute wealth. That is unproductive and un-American. Come January 2013, the tinman will be oiled up and ready to chop down the thicket of EPA regulations and malaise that is holding investment back. Maybe then the TFP will swap out their hack cartoonist for someone with basic common sense and decency.

aidehua,

Wealth redistribution cranked up in the '80s and again in the '00s. Look at the charts...the wealth went from the middle to the top, creating the present dangerous imbalance. Moving back toward a better balance only makes sense if we want a healthy America.

As for investment, our financial sector now uses investment money for complex international leverage products that have little or nothing to do with Main Street investment. The average share of stock is owned for abour 11 seconds...that's not investing, that's a financial circus, and if you try to play in it you will almost assuredly get burned. Regulation is a minor issue wherein under-regulation is as frequent a problem as over-regulation.

Both parties have the same platform, but with different color bunting. When the American public finally sees that, then maybe we will be ready to truly set a new course.

As for Clay...he does a pretty good job of making us think about issues and isn't that what he should be doing?

The economy did terribly under President Carter, well under Reagan who cut taxes, badly under Bush Sr who raised taxes after promising not to, OK under Clinton once the GOP got Congress, not super well under the big-spending Bush Jr, and terribly under the Democratic Congress and President Obama. Romney's problem is O'Romneycare (and distortions about his GOP rivals). Christians aren't locked into the 2-party system, since the King of kings has His own line and doesn't, like Clay, push the line of a flawed party. Libertarians offer an alternative that we know works. Dorothy & co worked together vuluntarily, not at the point of an IRS gun. I love the cartoon, but would point out that even liberal economists are supply-siders under the skin. The reason Obama doesn't address the deficit himself is that he knows the Republicans are right about dampening the economy if you take money away from investments. He is mortgaging the future for the next generation by allowing the problem to grow so he can win, selling a you-can-have-everything message if we soak the rich. Ultimately, the broad middle class will pay and social services will be reduced. The longer it takes to address the problem, the worse it will get.

I couldn't agree more. Mitt Romney won't have to make a single stop in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, S. Carolina, Mississippi, Texas or Kentucky. He can bypass those states because he has them in the bag. Unfortunately for the Repubs those are not the states that will determine the outcome of the election.

It's ironic the states with the lowest rankings in Education, wages, health care, and the highest in poverty rates think someone like Mitt Romney cares about their plight. For some ignorance is a way of life.

Who are you trying to kid, Jack. What about the Republican opposition to the Violence Against Women Act? I bet you didn’t even noticed that only a few Republicans like Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker broke rank to do the right thing in regard to VAWA:

“The 68-31 vote marked the first time since the Violence Against Women Act first passed in 1994 that its renewal has drawn opposition in the Senate, reflecting the increasing polarization of the chamber and hair-trigger political sensitivities over women's issues in this presidential and congressional election year.

"In 2012, we should be beyond questioning the need for the Violence Against Women Act," Vice President Joe Biden said in a statement. He urged the House to act quickly so President Barack Obama can sign the renewal into law. . .

The bill would reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act for five years with funding of $659.3 million a year, down $136.5 million annually from the last act, which has expired.

The money pays for such programs as legal assistance for victims, enforcement of protection orders, transitional housing and youth prevention programs.”

Who is the Oblamea that has soooooo much power of you? Stand up Bob, be a man. Take care of your own and quit blaming others for your stuff. You know good and well why your grandchildren will shoulder the debt. Same reason me and you did when we became adults. Same reason my grandchildren will. Mine just know why. Same reason we pay into social security and medicare, to help us take care of our loved ones. I bet half of the posters here get a gubbermint check.

You should be angry with Mitt, just because he is a liar. Don't you just hate liars?

Why is it Jack that you only use insults. I am not any of that, but so what if I was. Who cares? You only spew insults because you have no argument.

BobMKE - Obama isn't doing anything with "your" money. The money government spends is "our" money and that money is appropriated by congress, not the executive.

And, for a second point, is Romney really working with his own money? He did not just accumulate wealth, he appropriated much of it at someone else's expense. He might even have some of your money.

BobMKE is a confused Republican, MTJohn. Generally, they are fans of Dick Cheney's vision of the presidency - the imperial presidency. Congress is so bureaucratically burdensome - unless, of course, the President is a Democrat and his name is Barack Obama.

Reaganomics is really supply side economics.

Demand side economics has been proven NOT to work, because if taxing yourself into prosperity worked, then USSR, Cuba, and Venezuela would be economic powerhouses... But they just aren't. In fact they are pretty much failures. China is successful because it embraced capitalism. Due to increased regulation, a true supply side scenario in the US is not really possible, but the best example of supply side working is... When taxes are raised - revenue to the treasury tends to fall When taxes are lowered - revenue tends to rise. It's counter intuitive to a point, but it's the same concept that Toyota makes more money selling $15K cars than Rolls Royce makes selling $300K cars... Volume trumps the rate. In other words, lower taxes create more activity, which brings in more money Higher taxes stifle activity, which brings in less. This is the basic premise of Reaganomics. Reagan would have worked better if he'd had an unstoppable Republican majority in both Houses of Congress like Obama has had. But Reagan had a Democrat-controlled House and a lot of liberal GOP Senators to deal with. In order to get his priority policies enacted - re-buildup of the military, supply-side tax cuts, strongly opposing the Soviet Union around the world, etc - he had to compromise with the Democrats

And, so, here we are today. Thirty years ago, we were the greatest creditor nation on Earth. We had everything. Today, we are the greatest debtor nation on Earth and communist China is our banker. And, we provide China with scrap metal so that it can supply the world and us with finished goods instead of the other way around.

To: Justonewoman. This Country is going under and our kids and grandkids are going to pay a lot more then we have and are paying.

Another day filled with left vs right , blue vs red, dems vs repubs...funny if it wasn't so sad. Each of you continues to vote for your team like its a sporting match. Let me state what should be obvious: There is not a bit of difference in either President Obama or Mitt Romney. Neither has a plan to help you. You have been gerymandered into a red state/ district. The two parties play off your fears . Ever heard of divide and concour? If tax cuts created jobs why after 10 years of reduced taxes there aren't any jobs? Why do we increase your gov benifits for having more children you can't afford? Dems hate the rich repubs hate the poor yada yada yada. Step away and think for yourselves. Vote out all incumbants both parties are the same.

I will be voting for Ron Paul this november just like I did in the primary and back in 08. I like a man that stands up and tells it to me straight. I may not like the truth but at least I know where I stand. I agree the dems seem more compasionate toward the less fortunate but by design there policies trap and enslave the very people they are trying to help. It seems like there is a race on to out victimize and/or hyphonate each other. Each sub group gets a different set of rules and entitlements to protect at all costs weather its mediscare or welfare reform or student loan interest the other guy is out to get you and/or your bank account.

NOOGA... It is unfortunate that to be a successful republican today a candidate must suspend reality on issues from evolution to suppy side economics but again it comes back to dividing the masses into sub groups in order to maintain the status quo. Take this exaple: the tax increase for the rich . The debate was over raising taxes on income over a certain threshold either 250k or 1 mil, I can't remember exactly but the republican house wouldn't budge gonna hurt the job creators. But I took an acounting class many years ago and by hiring a worker the rich man would move said employees salary to the expence side of the ledger taking it away from the income side. So the budget was to increase the tax rate on income in excess of the established threshold and leave the rate lower on the amount under the threshold. So either keep your profits and pay more on the extra or follow me close here.... hire someone with the lower amount you are paying to avoid the increase. Just another way both parties work together by pretending to be at odds. I mean aren't they all millionares who benifit from the lower rate, just sayin

Or what about the environment. The left is gonna save it and the right wants to kill the planet. So the left wants high gas prices to curtail our driving and reduce green house gases and spur alternative energy and the right wants deregulation to lower cost and more land to drill on. But who profits the most from tough enviromental laws and high prices for energy? Gas and oil companies because they get to make a % on everything sold so if it costs more there cut is more. Less work for more money. So just in time for the 40 mpg cars the price of gas doubles . I guess that it is just a coincedence you will be able to go twice as far but still pay the same at the pump. We put a man on the moon and it only took one tank to get there and back and that was 40 years ago:)
