A young survivor of the devastating tornadoes that tore through the Chattanooga area in April 2011 has been named the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals "Tennessee Champion."

Nine-year-old Andrew Ellis came to Children's Hospital by Life Force on April 27, 2011. A tornado had ripped through his grandmother's Apison home, killing four of his family members and dragging him through a field where rescuers later found him, a news release from the hospital stated.

His mother, Wendy Ellis, said he survived because of the bravery that was displayed by rescuers and the life-saving skills provided by medical personnel that night, according to the news release.

This year, Andrew will serve as an ambassador for Children's Hospital at Erlanger, Tennessee and all children treated at Children's Miracle Network Hospital by raising awareness of Children's Hospital services, the news release stated.

This is the second consecutive year that a patient from Children's Hospital has been chosen for the honor, a news release from the hospital stated.

Hospital officials made the announcement Thursday morning at Wilson Air Center at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport.

The Children's Miracle Network Hospital Champions program identifies a child with a remarkable medical story from each state. These Champions serve as ambassadors for the 17 million children treated at CMN Hospitals annually, according to the news release.
