CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- A city school is getting an iPad Learning Laboratory with money contributed by a local banker.

Bank of Cleveland's CEO Scott Taylor donated $30,000 to the Cleveland/Bradley Public Education Foundation. The money will be used by E.L. Ross Elementary School.

Principal Lisa Earby said she heard from Debby Torres, director of the Cleveland School System's staff development, that a donor had approached the education foundation.

"With the money we will purchase an iPad Learning Lab. Their funding for the equipment is great. But they are also funding training, which is huge," Earby said. "Apple will come in and teach us how to do challenge-based learning with our students. . . We are beyond thrilled."

An iPad Learning Lab comes with a cart ready to roll into any classroom that has room to store 30 iPad devices. It comes with 10 of those devices, according to the company's website.

"We went to Scott and said, 'Remember us in your charitable giving,'" said Steve Robinson, a member of both the education foundation's and the bank's boards of trustees.

Taylor had read an article about the late Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs and education.

"He challenged us to find a way to give that would be measurable, that would produce results he could see; as any business person would want to do," Robinson said.

Taylor hopes the bank's action will be a model to other local businesses and individuals to support the foundation and public education, too, Robinson said.

In a letter to bank shareholders, Taylor said the bank is observing its 25th anniversary.

"We are proud to be a part of Bradley County and to contribute to shaping the lives of what will one day be our customers," he wrote.
