Steven Fox played the best golf round of his life Friday and the best competitive round ever at the Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior set the course record with an 8-under-par 64 in the second round of the NCAA South Central Regional.
"I had a feeling from the beginning, and I had only seven putts through the first seven holes," Fox said via cell phone. "Every putt that I looked at went in. On every putt, it felt like it was going to go in or touch the lip."
Fox's round helped the Mocs shoot a 7-under 281, which puts them in third place at 1-under 575 with one round to play. The top five teams advance to the NCAA championship tournament in California.
UCLA leads the regional at 571, and Texas A&M shot 10 under Friday and is at 573. The Mocs are followed by Memphis at 582 and Virginia Tech at 583.
"We're going to go out there to win the golf tournament," UTC coach Mark Guhne said. "We're going to win, not just advance to Riviera.
"It would be great to bring a regional championship back to Chattanooga."
UTC senior Stephan Jaeger, who shot a 5-under 67 on Friday, has a chance to win the individual title. He eagled the last hole to move into a tie for first at 7-under 137 with Pedro Figueiredo of UCLA.
"He's so smart and makes a lot of good decisions, and that leads to good rounds," Guhne said of Jaeger. "A 67 on this course is outstanding."
Virginia Tech's Scott Vincent is third at 139, leaving Fox in fourth place by himself and one shot ahead of Memphis' Jonathan Fly.
UTC freshman Liam Johnston shot 2 over, sophomore Chris Robb shot 4 over and Davis Bunn had the drop score Friday.
"It was a great day and there was a lot of high-fiving, and it almost felt like the last day of a tournament," Guhne said. "We have a little cushion [to fifth place], and today's round also got us within shouting distance of UCLA. An eagle by Jaeger on the last hole sure helped."
• At Norman, Okla., Middle Tennessee State is out of the running with a 13th-place 620 -- 53 shots behind leader Washington and 44 back of fifth-place Georgia Tech. MTSU senior Hunter Green from Rhea County is tied for 43rd individually at 152, and Brett Patterson from McMinnville has the team's next best score, 154.
