Georgia Supreme Court gets new chief

Justice George Carley was sworn in Tuesday as the 29th chief justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia, a post he will hold for less than two months.

Carley said last fall that he would retire in July. He would have been retiring as presiding justice of the high court, but his colleagues on the bench unanimously voted for him to serve as chief justice for two months.

He is the first person in Georgia history to have been presiding judge and chief judge of the Georgia Court of Appeals, as well as presiding justice and chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court.
