GPS tennis coach Sue Bartlett knocked off the top two singles seeds last Sunday and won the USTA National Women's 50 Clay Court Championships at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. "I haven't won one of these since I was 35," Bartlett said after winning the semifinal and final matches on the same day. Hurricane Sandy's approach led to a compressed schedule, and Bartlett spent about seven hours on the court Sunday. She finished fourth in doubles with fellow local coach and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga alumna Sue Webb. Bartlett, the fifth seed in singles, blitzed No. 2 seed Vicki Buholz of Dallas in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-2, and then won 6-2, 3-6, 10-3 over top-seeded Frances Chandler of Jackson, Tenn. Bartlett won five singles matches in all, including 7-6 (5), 6-2 over third-seeded Kathy Vick of Lubbock, Texas, in the quarterfinals. Bartlett and Webb lost 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 in a doubles semifinal against Buholz and Vick and fell 6-3, 6-0 to Chandler and Myke Loomis-Landauer of Naples, Fla., in the third-place match.
