ATLANTA - An Atlanta police helicopter with two people on board crashed at a major intersection in a southwest district, but there was no immediate report on the fate of the two.

The helicopter went down about 10:30 p.m. Saturday about where two major highways intersect south of Interstate 20, a major east-west artery crossing the city, Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos said. He declined to immediate release who was aboard and whether there were deaths or injuries.

Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, told The Associated Press by email that two people were on board. She said she no information to release on their condition and did not know yet what type of helicopter was involved. She also said that the FAA would investigate the crash and the National Transportation Safety Board would be involved in trying to determine the cause.

David Tulis, a photographer for AP who went to the scene, said police cordoned off the crash site for several blocks and it was not immediately visible from his vantage point. He said power was blacked out early Sunday at a pharmacy and other stories around the area and a Georgia Power utility crew appeared to be working to restore power.

Tulis said he saw no signs of smoke and the crash site was obscured by a small rise but two fire trucks and several police patrol cars were at the site.
