Vanderbilt's Hannah Jumper of Chattanooga was first-team All-Southeastern Conference and the league's freshman of the year in women's cross country after finishing seventh in the league meet. Jumper, a redshirt freshman who won three state high school cross country titles and six in track at Baylor School, outpaced the next-fastest first-year runner by 12 seconds in the SEC race with her finish of 20 minutes, 41 seconds for six kilometers. She has been one of the top four Commodores in every race this season and won the 4k Belmont Opener. They will participate in the NCAA South Regional this Friday at Tallahassee, Fla.

Volleyball

• Briana Reid of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga was the Southern Conference volleyball freshman of the week after totaling 42 kills and 64 digs in three matches, including two 3-2 league wins this past weekend. The Houston resident had 11 kills and 10 digs in a 3-1 loss at 20-8 Samford, 17 kills and 26 digs in Friday's win over UNC Greensboro and 14 kills and 28 digs in Saturday's defeat of Elon. The Mocs end their regular season this weekend at Western Carolina and Appalachian State and need to win of those to make the SoCon tournament field.

• The All-Great South Athletic Conference volleyball team headed by Covenant coach Heather Taylor and freshman middle hitter Chelsea Van Dyk (already reported) included Salem College junior middle blocker Michelle Morgan from Chattanooga. Morgan was one of four Salem players chosen, matching league regular-season champion Covenant, which still is a provisional NCAA Division III member and couldn't be in the GSAC tournament. Salem won the tourney title with Morgan making 16 kills in the 3-1 final win over top seed Huntingdon.

• As the regular-season volleyball champion in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, top-seeded Bryan will play either eighth seed Reinhardt or ninth seed St. Andrews at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the AAC tournament in Kingsport, Tenn. Those teams face off at 11 a.m., when seventh seed Tennessee Wesleyan plays 10th-seeded Point on the other court at the MeadowView Marriott Resort & Convention Center. Wesleyan would play Montreat at 6:30 if it wins the morning match.

Basketball

• The Lee University women's basketball team nearly pulled off a win in Monday night's exhibition game at NCAA Division I Tennessee Tech. Tech won 71-66 with Kellie Cook nailing a 3-point basket to give the Golden Eagles a four-point lead with just under a minute left. She ended with 10 points, while Diamond Henderson led Tech with 13 points off the bench. Lee's Hollie German scored 18 points and Jenna Adams had 13 rebounds with eight points. Karley Miller scored nine of her 12 points in a row to put the Lady Flames ahead early in the second half.

• Ish Sanders from Cleveland scored 16 points in helping Division II Carson-Newman nearly beat Division I Appalachian State in a men's basketball exhibition Monday at Boone, N.C. A Sanders layup with a minute left brought the Eagles within one, but the Mountaineers held on and won 62-59.

• Cleveland State's basketball teams split their season openers Saturday at Chattahoochee Tech in Marietta, Ga., and play again this evening. Cleveland State's Lady Cougars, who visit West Georgia Tech tonight, lost 83-76 in overtime after leading by 10 points in the second half. The game was marred by shot-clock problems with action repeatedly stopped while it was being reset. Hannah Brown and Robyn Anthony scored 18 and 17 points for the Lady Cougars, while Chelsea Jones had 11. Travis Jones and Ralph Eason scored 20 points each and Trey Suttles added 19 in a 91-71 win for the Cougars, who host the Lee University junior varsity at 7 p.m.

Soccer

• Bryan junior Nathan Adams was the AAC men's offensive soccer player of the week after scoring all of the Lions' goals in their 3-1 win over St. Andrews in their tournament quarterfinal last Saturday, and Tennessee Wesleyan senior center forward Britten Fandrich was the women's offensive honoree after scoring twice in the Lady Bulldogs' 4-2 tournament win over St. Andrews. She has seven goals this season. Wesleyan faces Milligan at 11 a.m. Thursday in the women's semifinals at Montreat; Bryan's guys play the TWC Bulldogs at 4 p.m. that day at Milligan.
