Richt set for FCA Feb. 28 banquet

The Lookout Mountain Fellowship of Christian Athletes has announced that Georgia football coach Mark Richt will be the banquet speaker for the FCA's Home Team Banquet at the Colonnade in Ringgold on Feb. 28. Money raise from the banquet and silent auction will benefit the FCA ministry in Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade and Walker counties. Tables and sponsorships can be reserved at various contribution levels. Volleyball

• Even before second-seeded Lee University won the Southern States Athletic Conference volleyball tournament championship Saturday in Montgomery, Ala., Lady Flames junior Irene Ojukwu from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was honored as SSAC player of the year and joined on the all-conference first team by teammates Paula Martins, Camil Martinez and Marija Zelenovic. Nicole Sumida from Baylor and Libby Peigen from Ooltewah were second-team All-SSAC, and Sumida was the freshman of the year. Courtney Wilson represented Lee on the Champions of Character team. Lee is 28-9 and ranked ninth in the NAIA.

Basketball

• Brandon Cole had 19 points and 14 rebounds and Rafael Tyler had 17 points and five assists in Bryan College's basketball game Saturday night at Berea College, but the Kentucky team won 77-67 with Koty Riley and Rashad Hayden scoring 18 points each and Tevin Webster contributing 16 points and 19 rebounds. Berea is 3-1; Bryan is 2-4. Bryan's Lady Lions improved to 4-1 with an 83-45 win at Hiwassee.

• The Cleveland State men's basketball team improved to 4-0 for the season and 2-0 in TCCAA play with an 87-71 defeat of visiting Dyersburg State on Saturday. The Dyersburg women beat Cleveland State 70-62 despite 15 points and eight rebounds from Ciera Anderson for the Lady Cougars (1-3, 0-2). Gabe Dando scored 15 points, Ralph Eason scored 14 with six assists and Kahan Swift had 15 rebounds with 12 points in the Cougars' win, and Travis Jones had seven assists.

• Chattanooga State defeated the Southwest Tennessee Lady Saluqis 69-63 but lost 104-80 to the Saluqis in other TCCAA play Saturday. Denise Johnson scored 18 points and Khamiyah Crawford and Jamillie Reed added 15 and 12 for the Lady Tigers (4-0, 2-0). Nick Ross scored 26 in defeat for the Tigers (3-1, 1-1), who got 14 from Anthony Prescott. Four Southwest Tennessee guys scored 13 or more points, led by Cedrick McAfee with 25.

Diving

• Sewanee's Charles Boclair III was the Southern Athletic Association's male diver of the week last week, and Saturday he finished second in the 1-meter competition and first in the 3-meter in the inaugural Sewanee Invitational Diving Meet. It also included NCAA Division I member Western Kentucky and Emory's defending NCAA Division III national champion women's program. Sewanee's Courtney Moore was third in men's 1-meter, and Abigail Nebb was fourth in women's 1-meter.

Baseball

• The Chattanooga Cyclones K fall baseball team finished its season at 19-5-2 by going 2-2 last weekend at the Charleston (S.C.) Fall Classic. Josh Poole had three hits and three RBIs, Nic Gaddis drove in two runs and Lee Gibson and Winston Whitener each had two hits in support of pitchers Zach Thompson and Charlie Ward in a 10-4 win over the Low Country Lightning. Gibson had two hits and scored a run and Logan Fugate, Jake Wyrick and Tyler Higdon had RBIs in a 5-4 loss to the Carolina Reds. Whitener had three hits and three RBIs, Gibson scored twice, starting pitcher Logan Baldwin had an RBI double and Wyrick got the pitching win in a 6-4 defeat of the East Coast Baseball Club. Baldwin and Gibson each doubled and singled, combining for three RBIs, in a 9-4 loss to the East Cobb Astros.

Rugby

• FORT MYERS, Fla. - Despite moving on to a new sport, former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball player Tia Blosser is continuing to win championships. Blosser, along with Chattanooga's Dana Jackson and former UTC rugby player Kari Morrison, helped the Atlanta Harlequins claim a 33-14 win over the Oregon Sports Union on Sunday in the the Rugby USA Women's Division I Club Championship title game. Sunday's win is the first national championship for the club, which was founded in 1984.
