FUNDRAISER

THE SALVATION Army Women's Auxiliary recently held its annual purse auction to help raise funds for the many programs supported by The Salvation Army, said auxiliary spokeswoman Juanita Oliver.

"Carter Stine, of Twin City Auction, was the auctioneer who has donated his time every year for the auction, as has Cindy Sexton, who was the emcee," Oliver said.

"The Salvation Army plays an important role in helping many people in the Chattanooga area. The Women's Auxiliary supports the annual Angel Tree program, helps with underprivileged women's issues and is involved in disaster relief," she said.

Auxiliary members spend many hours soliciting merchants and filling the purses with items for the event, which includes live and silent auctions, she said. The auction is one of the largest annual fundraisers for The Salvation Army.

FOUR black Tennessee natives were named to the 2012 Ebony Power 200 list, sponsored by Ebony Magazine, said magazine spokeswoman Felicia Matthews.

"The 2012 Ebony Power 100 features 53 women and salutes 21 categories of African-American influencers."

The honorees, Samuel L. Jackson, Marjorie Harvey, Jesse Russell and Dr. Mark Dean, were recognized recently at a dinner held at the Ebony Power 100 Gala at Jazz Lincoln Center in New York City. The event featured special performances by some of the cast from Broadway's hit musical "Fela," The Black Monks of Mississippi, a collaboration of soul musicians and singers, the Abyssinian Baptist Church Choir, classical violinist Brendon Elliott and Grammy Award-winning hip-hop/neo-soul band The Roots.

"The Ebony Power 100 spotlights African Americans who personify power in all its manifestations -- strength, focus, commitment and determination -- those who innovate, elevate and shape the world in new and different ways," according to a news release.

The list appears in the December/January issue of Ebony, now on newsstands.
