Jack Taylor is not a Moc.

And no Mocs will approach anything near the record he set Tuesday night by scoring 138 points in a basketball game for NCAA Division III member Grinnell College.

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga players were mixed in their reaction before practice Thanksgiving morning. In general, they appreciated the effort, were not jealous but felt it cheapens the game they love.

But who would be the most likely Moc to break 100 or challenge Taylor -- hypothetically?

"Me -- I'm most likely," injured senior Dontay Hampton said.

It's not going to happen. No UTC team has scored 138 points in 40 minutes.

But hypothetically ...

"There are two guys in here who could do it if we got him enough shots," coach John Shulman said , pointing at Dontay Hampton and Farad Cobb. "Farad Cobb could do it, and, boy, would he love to take 108 shots."

The Mocs' team record for points in a game was set against Emmanuel in 2003 at 125. Oliver Morton set the UTC individual record with 50 points against Pikeville in 2001.

Taylor and his teammates beat Faith Baptist Bible College 179-104. David Larson scored 70 points in a losing effort. Taylor shot 50-of-108 from the floor, including 27-of-71 from the 3-point line.

The 3-jack-happy Mocs of last season were in the second half of their fourth game when they attempted their 71st 3 of the year.

"They play -- and they've played it for a long time -- a very unique style of basketball, and I'm a purist of the game," Shulman said. "Some people think that's good and fun, but there are no Division I teams in the country that do that."

Iona led Division I in scoring last year with an average of 83.3 points per game.

"They have a rule where they have to shoot within the first seven seconds of the shot clock," Shulman said of Grinnell. "We tried that last year and it just didn't work out for us."

Kidding, of course, by Shulman.

Freshman guard Gee McGhee first learned of the 138-point game when ESPN sent an alert to his cell phone: "I thought my phone was tripping," McGhee said. "I couldn't believe it."

The scoring offensive drew attention from the vast basketball landscape, ranging from the Division III level to NBA superstars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.

"Coach Shulman would never ever do that," UTC freshman Casey Jones said. "For a coach to let one player shoot that much is disrespectful."

Frank Selvy set the Southern Conference single-game record when he scored 100 points for Furman in 1954. No SoCon player in the last 24 years has scored more in a game than Marshall's Skip Henderson with 55 points.

Even former Davidson star Stephen Curry never topped the 50-point barrier. Yet a Division III player from Wisconsin who averaged three shots per minute now owns the NCAA all-division record for points in a game.

"It's very gimmicky," Shulman said. "Curry scored 41 against us in a legit basketball game. That's more impressive than the 138."
