Volkswagen's head of global design said Wednesday that the German automaker may reveal a new sport utility vehicle in Detroit in January.

Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen's head of global design, said at the Los Angeles Auto Show that a three-row SUV will be "most hopefully" revealed at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, according to the Autoblog website.

VW Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn said earlier that its Chattanooga assembly plant that produces the Passat sedan is in the mix to build the SUV, and a decision is expected to be made next year.

Bischoff also said that a replacement for the aging Routan minivan is "not on the to-do list," noting that VW will end its relationship with Chrysler, which manufacturers the Routan, Autoblog said.
