Kevin Orr has stepped down as football coach at Soddy-Daisy High School after three seasons.

"It was his decision," school principal John Maynard said. "He said he wanted to do what was best for the players."

The two met Wednesday afternoon and decided, in Maynard's words, to sleep on any decision.

"When he came in today, [resigning] is what he wanted to do," Maynard said Thursday evening.

Soddy-Daisy was 2-8 this past season and 4-6 in 2011 and 2009. His only winning season, and a playoff year, came in 2010 when the Trojans were 7-5. That was one of only two winning seasons Soddy-Daisy has had since 2005, the other coming under E.K. Slaughter in 2008 (8-4).

The 2010 playoff win was one of three for Soddy-Daisy since 2000. Orr was the fourth head coach in that time, joining Slaughter, Tom Weathers and Glen Ryan. Weathers has retired, Slaughter is coaching at Red Bank and Ryan is at Walker Valley.

"He is going to stay on the faculty and he told the boys he planned on working with them as long as he was here," Maynard said. "He did say he was going to look for another teaching and coaching position."

Maynard hired Orr in May 2009 after Slaughter decided to accept an offer from Cleveland after just a year at Soddy-Daisy.

"I've had to hire [a football coach] twice. The last time I had to do it in a hurry," the principal said. "The other time, when I hired E.K., I think I took from December to February. This time I'll be shocked if anything happens before the new year, but I don't think it'll be much after that."
