UTC netters win five Baras flights

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis players won four flight championships as the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic ended Sunday at the Champions Club, including nationally 58th-ranked Jenna Nurik and Kaylene Chadwell with the Flight 1 doubles title by edging a Kennesaw State duo 8-6. Lady Mocs freshmen Katie Polk and Kelsey Coots won Flight 3 doubles, and Polk and classmate Kayla Jones won singles championships in the Nos. 4 and 5 draws, respectively. Jones and Alexa Flynn lost 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles final, and Claire Mulyadi and Jovana Pecovski gave UTC third place in No. 3 doubles. Nurik edged Chadwell 7-6(6), 6-3 for third in the top singles draw, and Mulyadi was third in Flight 3. In men's play, UTC's William Disterdick and Pavels Grigorjevs won Flight 4 doubles with an 8-5 win over an UNC Greensboro pair, and fellow Mocs Robert Vieira and Chris Smith in Flight 1 and Ankit Chopra and Stephen Crofford in Flight 3 won backdraws.

Golf

• Chattanooga orthopedic surgeon Neil Spitalny was one of the 64 qualifiers for 2012 USGA Senior Amateur Championship match play starting today with a 149 for Saturday's and Sunday's stroke play at Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell, N.J. The cut was at 149, and Danny Green of Jackson, Tenn., was one of those just missing at 150. Steve Golliher of Knoxville qualified third at 139 with a 68 Sunday. Jim Holtgrieve of St. Louis was the top qualifier at 136.

SOCCER

• The UTC women's soccer team lost 5-1 in a Southern Conference match Sunday at Furman, but Mocs coach J.D. Kyzer praised his team's play. "I know the box score doesn't show it, but it was as good a game as we've played all year," he said in a school release. "There were many more positives today." Furman (9-2-1, 2-1-1) was credited with a 49-5 dominance in shots, including 26-0 in the first half, but didn't score until Hannah Stanifer got a superb shot past Lauren Thomas with 3:21 left in the half, from a Caitlin Shelton assist. Shelton scored 1:49 into the second half and then Stephanie DeVita scored twice and Dee Makris made it 5-0 before Mocs senior captain Tayler Shelby, a defender, headed in her first career goal from a corner kick by freshman Hannah Wyatt at 75:05. Thomas had 19 saves for UTC (2-7-1, 0-4).

• The Sewanee women's soccer team opened Southern Athletic Association play with a 1-0 win Saturday at Oglethorpe and then beat Agnes Scott 2-1 in overtime in a nonconference match Sunday. Jamie Samociuk scored off a Bobbe Chaffin assist in the fifth minute against Oglethorpe, and Bess Goodman had both Tigers scores Sunday, the first from a Samociuk pass. Her score in the 103rd minute gave Sewanee (5-5) a 27-11 margin in shots. Sewanee's men dropped to 3-7 with a 2-0 loss at Oglethorpe (7-1). Both goals came off corner kicks.

• Luke Winter scored in the first half and Josh Simnett and John Carrier added goals nine and 14 minutes into the second half as Tennessee Wesleyan beat visiting Martin Methodist 3-0 in men's soccer Saturday. TWC (5-3-2) had a 16-8 advantage in shots.

Volleyball

• The Sewanee volleyball team lost its SAA match Sunday at Hendrix, 25-20, 25-17, 25-19. Sophomore Kayla Sewell and freshman Rebecca Hannigan each had seven kills, freshman Jamie Kosman made 16 digs and Rachel Schuman had 11 assists and 10 digs and Virginia Boyd added 10 assists for Sewanee (8-7, 2-5).

• Four-year school Oakwood University held off the two-year Georgia Northwestern volleyball team 20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-16 in a match late Saturday night at Huntsville, Ala. All the players for the visiting Lady Bobcats (1-7) are freshmen, and 5-foot-3 - from LaFayette led them with 13 kills.

Field Hockey

• Sewanee lost 3-1 at Hendrix on Saturday and fell 2-1 at Rhodes on Sunday in SAA field hockey. Molly Kennedy scored from a Tilden Davis assist Saturday and Anne Booke had a tying goal Sunday for the Tigers (4-5, 1-3), who don't play again until Oct. 13. Rhodes had a 13-4 edge in shots.

Running

• Eighteen-year-old Adam Tavzer won Chattanooga's 2012 Susan G. Komen Run for the Cure competitive 5-kilometer race Sunday with a finish in 17 minutes, 9.13 seconds. Former Lee University runner Maggie Opelt was the women's winner and fifth overall in 18:34.89 with Amanda Tate sixth in 19:03.81. Calvin Cofield, masters winner Ryan Shrum and Troy Ketchum were second through fourth in 17:22.30, 17:50.31 and 18:07.07.

Softball

• The Lady Moc RBI Club is hosting a college softball "fall get-together" this coming weekend at Warner Park, with UTC and eight other teams. Those include area schools Bryan, Chattanooga State and Cleveland State. UTC's Lady Mocs are scheduled to play at 5 and 7 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
