IF YOU GO
What: Wine Over Water.
When: 5-8 p.m. Saturday.
Where: Walnut Street Bridge.
Admission: $65 in advance, $70 at gate (if available).
This Saturday, stroll the Walnut Street Bridge and sample more than 300 wines from more than 100 wineries.
"We have the biggest variety of wines this year than we've had before," said Ann Gray, executive director of Cornerstones, a historic preservation nonprofit in Chattanooga. Including, she said, a rock-star wine.
"Did you know that Dave Matthews has his own winery?" Gray said. The musician himself will not be on hand.
There is also, she said, an increase in German wines.
Tickets cost $65 in advance or $70 the day of the event. Guests will receive a wristband and a commemorative wineglass into which samples will be poured. The ticket covers as many wines as a guest wishes to taste. In addition, area restaurants including Easy Bistro, St. John's, 212 Market and a new selection, El Mercado, will be selling small plate samples. Buying a ticket to the event is not necessary to purchase food. The bridge will be open to pedestrians during the festival.
'"It's a destination event," Gray said. "We have a lot of people from the region who come."
In addition to wine and food, the event will feature live blues, bluegrass and folk music.
Some of the proceeds have been earmarked for the restoration and preservation of historic Engel Stadium, a recent filming location for the Jackie Robinson biopic, "42." This is the first time funds from Wine Over Water have been directed toward a specific spot, Gray said.
Last year, Wine Over Water brought in about $160,000, Gray said.
