The edge of Chattanooga resident Deborah King's yard at 1100 Tunnel Blvd. is taped off as part of a homicide crime scene.

She was lying down at home when she heard several shots, she said.

"I heard gunshots, so I jumped up to make sure my kids were in the house," she said. "Once I saw they were in the house, I laid back down. And that's when I heard the sirens and saw all the police."

A teenager was shot and killed Friday afternoon at 1111 Arcadia Ave., Chattanooga police said.

Police found Monterius Rollins, 18, shot in the abdomen after responding to a shots fired call at 3:22 p.m., Sgt. Wayne Jefferson said.

He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Jefferson said the crime scene is spread out. Several spots in the neighborhood were blocked off with yellow police tape.

"Everything happened right here in this area," Jefferson said at the corner of Tunnel Boulevard and Hoyt Street. "We're canvassing the area and talking to witnesses."

King said she saw a woman and two men arguing outside her house about noon Friday - three hours before the shooting.

Her 14-year-old daughter said she heard five or six shots, then several more shots about 10 minutes later.

It's unclear whether Rollins was involved in that argument or if it was related to the shooting. Jefferson said investigators don't have any suspect information and there is no evidence the shooting is gang-related.

A neighbor called police to report that shots had been fired, he said.

This is the 20th homicide in Chattanooga this year. The city's two most recent homicides both happened within a mile of Friday's shooting.

Cary Abram, 27, was sitting in his car at 3412 Jones St. - just five streets away from Arcadia Avenue - when he was shot on Sept. 25. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

On Sept. 22, 20-year-old Quincy Bell was shot in the 3800 block of Shallowford Road - about a mile from Friday's crime scene.

Another 29-year-old man was shot about a mile south on Tunnel Boulevard on Aug. 15, Chattanooga Times Free Press records show.
