Heritage High School graduate Hunter Cornelius helped the College of Coastal Georgia shoot the best team round in its golf history (8-under-par 280) Tuesday and win the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational men's tournament hosted by Berry College at two Rome courses. The Mariners shot 578, edging University of Cumberlands by a stroke. Lee University finished fourth at 597 with a much-improved 292 Tuesday, while Covenant tied Berry for 14th at 615 and Bryan was 21st at 682. Cornelius tied for first individually with a 141 with his 68 Tuesday and came in second in a three-way playoff. Covenant's Levi Nix and Lee B-squad member Peyton Sliger tied for 14th at 147, and Lee's Florian Loutre, JB Eksteen and Taylor Davis shared 24th at 149 with Matt Emery at 150. Covenant's Trey Patterson shot 153.
• Richard Powell from Notre Dame High School tied for fourth at 141 (72-69) and teammate Taylor Gouge was the medalist at 137 as the King College men's golf team tied Belmont Abbey for second Monday and Tuesday in the eight-team King Invitational at the Bristol Country Club. Barton College won. Cortnee Young from Walker Valley was second best on the runner-up King women's team with a ninth-place 168.
• As was already reported, former Baylor School golfer Emily Javadi of Sewanee tied for second behind Lee's Courtney Shelton in Birmingham-Southern's tournament that ended Monday, with Signal Mountain graduate Sarah Dolmovich finishing fourth, but another Baylor alumna, Alyssa Brown of Centre, tied for 14th place at 149 with a second-round 72 and Baylor's Kaleigh Toole was BSC's second best to Dolmovich.
• Lee University junior middle blocker Irene Ojukwu from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was the Southern States Athletic Conference volleyball player of the week for her double-figure kills in each of three road wins last week. She had 14 digs with 10 kills in Saturday's win at Belhaven. The Lady Flames, ranked fifth in the NAIA, are 18-6, 9-1 in the league, after winning 19-25, 25-19, 16-25, 25-19, 15-12 Tuesday at Brenau in Gainesville, Ga.
• Paige Eslinger from Ringgold had 32 digs for Piedmont College (16-6) and former GPS player Katheryn Knarr contributed 18 assists and three aces in a 19-25, 27-25, 25-19, 25-22 volleyball win Tuesday at Covenant. Eslinger has been a USA South defensive player of the week twice this season. Chelsea Van Dyk and Jessica Chittenden had 16 and 15 kills and Pretoria den Boer added 10 for the host Lady Scots (16-5), who got 41 assists and 16 digs from Stephanie Kirkpatrick, 21 digs apiece from Cora Schroeder and Estes Carlson, 14 digs from Hannah Rogers and 13 from Paige Cheney.
• Bryan College sophomore Taylor Fink from Kingsport, Tenn., was the AAC volleyball setter of the week, and junior teammate Corrie Walker from Knoxville was the libero of the week. Walker has 1,085 career digs for the AAC leaders. Union College had the player of the week and the hitter honoree.
• Kayla Pierce and Candice McClain served five and four aces and Alysa Daniel made seven kills as Georgia Northwestern's all-freshman volleyball team won 25-10, 25-22, 25-15 at four-year school Hiwassee on Tuesday. The Lady Bobcats (2-12) are holding "Pack the RAC" night Monday at the Rossville Athletic Complex against another four-year school, Oakwood University from Huntsville. That will be the final home match of GNTC's inaugural volleyball season in the NJCAA.
• Luke Winter of Tennessee Wesleyan College and Richard Kirk of Bryan were the Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer players of the week. Winter, a senior from England, was the offensive honoree after scoring two goals in the Bulldogs' 4-1defeat of Milligan on Saturday. He leads TWC with nine goals this season. Kirk, a senior center back from Scotland, was a key part of two shutout wins for the first-place Lions, ranked 18th in the NAIA. The opponents totaled only three shots on goal.
• Liz Adams scored five goals and fellow local freshman Courtney Born had a goal and two assists as the Tennessee Temple women's soccer team won 6-1 at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala., on Monday. The Temple men pulled out a 4-3 overtime win in the doubleheader. The TTU guys are 6-7; the Lady Crusaders are 4-8-1.
• The Red Bank Boxing Club will begin workouts Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the Henry Luken Sports Facility, and candidates ages 8 and older are invited. There is no charge to take part. Club director Skipper Fairbanks, beginning his 65th year as a boxing coach, said workouts will be held Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Call him at 877-4113 for more information.
